Gotham: Season 1 [DVD] [2014]

Dark, credible, compelling, adding flaws to the good and pathos to the bad. A expertly constructed and played 'backstory'
If you enjoyed the 'darker' side of the Batman movies Gotham won't disappoint. A dark and brooding Gotham city, run by convincing mobsters, but with fantasy glam mobster dames adding the sort of glamour once reserved for cat woman, provides a convincing setting. The 'back stories' constructed for each of the characters, taking us from a rookie recruit James Gordon through all the villains to the child Bruce Wayne, lead on quite credibly into the characters we have long known, remaining quite true to those characters. There's a pleasure to recognise a famous villain in the creation. One thing that lifts this above the classic black and white good versus evil story is that no-one is perfect, everyone is flawed and there's frequently a pathos associated with quite villainous characters, who also have their charm and allure. You'll feel great sympathy and grow in understanding for people you historically detested. There's plenty of twists along the way and following a couple of episodes I found a character who was (in my mind) definitely the 'back story' for a later well known villain (I'm being vague to avoid a 'spoiler') but then suddenly they died, and clearly I had been led down a wrong (and dark) alley. There is a cohesion to the storyline running through all the episodes making this not just a series of small amuses bouches but a growing and intriguing elongated narrative history. Stories frequently run through several episodes and they're compelling enough that I'd end up late unable to resist the 'up next' chapter. The darkness of this series includes violence and scenes that I'd say aren't suitable for children.

Excellent Batman prequel series.
This has quickly become one of my TV favourites. A dark prequel to the Batman stories, completely different to the Batman series I remember with Adam West, it shows how not only Batman, but Commissioner Gordon, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Alfred the Butler and others became the characters we know. The stories revolve mostly around new Detective Gordon and his partner Harvey Bullock, ( tough, not so bright, semi corrupt but loyal in his own way ) as they fight various sometimes bizarre crimes ( murder by balloon ) with the recurring theme of investigating the murder of the Waynes. We find the future Riddler working for the police as a forensic scientist, Catwoman a homeless witness to the Wayne murders, Penguin manipulating his way to the top working for two competing crime families and Alfred protecting and helping the young Bruce and Gordon. A very entertaining and absorbing new take on familiar stories. I will be buying all the following series.

Wonderful Start!
I really enjoyed the first season of Gotham. A reimagining of the early years of Bruce Wayne. I fell right in step with the show's intent and I really enjoyed the first season. I recommend this to all Batman fans who are willing to give it a look. Just know that there is no Batman but that is not what the series is all about. The story is what Gotham was like before the Dark Knight showed up. Gordon takes center stage. Ben McKenzie plays Gordon and is very good. He has Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock I really like Donal here he really shines. I binged this and really enjoyed myself and am now starting on season 2

Great first impression, definite potential :-)
First impressions, very good. The characters are good fits, specifically penguin and Gordon. I like the chemistry between Gordon ad his partner Harvey, great choices. However, I am a fan of many batman adaptions and can be very critical of any attempt to bring it to light. I just hope, as the current trend in film and TV seems to be "realistic gritty", that they drop this from the show. I want to see the fantasy and fantastic displays of the villains and hero's, the huge plots and twists, surreal characters and sinister villains. I hate the trend of "just a guy" approach, realistic abilities and watered down villains. Without giving much away this looks like it has promise, is very good so far but I just pray that the show doesn't bow to realism, embraces the dark fantasy of this amazing franchise and hits big with the villains and plots. Here's to hoping and future viewing :-)P.S. If black Mask and Joker are to make an appearance, or any other major villain, please make them as the comics, animated shows, or even games intended. (By this I mean black mask with a black mask (Arkham origins image, definitely) and Joker as, well, joker! :-) don't for the love of batman make him a smart dressed normal dude, that would be sacrilege! :-/)

Very Underated Series
This is the first season of the Gotham series - I have all of 4 of them on blu-ray here from Amazon and soon gonna get the 5th season as well to complete them. From the first episode you can tell that this is somesith different but in the good way.the tone is very dark and it's a different take on the batman world but with respect to all the fans.I never heard anyone complaining about the series..only problem is that they deserved more attention fom people. If you are thinking to start now - Don't Hesitate - The blu-ray are fantastic start with this one and you will not regret it.

Very Moreish.
Aside from being a little slow to get started this show just goes from strength to strength. Filled with classic Batman characters it blends previous Batman stories but creates it own take on what we already know and love. Barbara Kean's character starts off a tad annoying but later becomes very enjoyable and fun to watch. Jim Gordon isn't great and sometimes feels as though he's been transported from an old western playing a sheriff but he's grown on me.Aside from Jim letting the side down (only a little) this show is fantastic, gripping, fun and a thoroughly enjoyable watch. I hope they go on for many more seasons.
