Great Book Beyond Just Carb Counts
Well this book was really a great mistake. What I mean is, I was trying to find a book that was just a list of carb counts. Instead, we received a book filled with helpful information on carb counting beyond 'the list'. My husband is a type 1 diabetic, and I really watch my carbs, so this book has helped us both a lot. The info on stuff like sugar alcohols, etc. helps a lot because many of the packages are labeled in misleading ways regarding 'net' carbs'. This book gave us some answers as to which ones I can subtract (for weight control) as opposed to which ones my husband can and cant subtract (that still can affect bood sugar). The eating out guides are great, but the way restaurants change menus, the info gets outdated quickly. However, getting into the habit of asking for nutrition info makes it easy to work it all out for yourself.

Calculation of Sugar Alcohol Calories Is Incorrect
I purchased this book to assist me with carb counting. The algorithm for estimating the amount of sugar alcohol calories from nutrition labels is flat-out wrong. The author doesn't seem to understand basic accounting math. The correct way to account for sugar alcohol carbs is to get the total carbs, subtract all the listed carbs, and attribute the remaining carbs to sugar alcohols. Instead the author counts the itemized carbs and subtracts the total carbs from that. If he calculated the excess carbs correctly using his methods, he would always arrive at a negative value; which is non-nonsensical. Instead he flips the subtraction around to avoid getting a negative result. This is irrefutable evidence there is a problem with some of the underlying assumptions (9 cal/g for fats and 4 cal/g for proteins) or a problem with the contrived examples in the book. The sum of the itemized calories (per serving) should never be larger than the total calories (per serving), which is measured using a bomb calorimeter. The author then states to divide the number of sugar alcohol calories by 2, combining the divide by 2 step for getting the "digestible" sugar alcohol calories from the total sugar alcohol calories. I contend this will cause many people to divide the sugar alcohol calories by 2 twice, (introducing a -50% error for sugar alcohol carbs) when they are totaling up their "digestible carb" count. My point is the algorithms/formulas in this book for calculating sugar alcohol calories are incorrect. Gary Scheiner, please don't mislead people and fix this in future revisions of your book.

OK, but not the best
This book has a lot of listings. However, it spends too much time preaching the gospel of low carb. All I really wanted was the numbers, not a how to book. I bought it to supplement my go to counter-the T-factor carb and fat counter book. If you want a book with explanations and there are other guides available this might work for you.

My professor was doing a lousy job explaining carb counting ...
My professor was doing a lousy job explaining carb counting. So I purchased this book. I learned it. I wish there was a book that explained all of the exchanges. None the less, carb counting/exchanges seem to be for the mathematically minded.

Guide to Carbs
I wanted a book for counting carbs in my diet. This book did much more than that. I was pleasantly susrprised to learn that carbs were not as bad and that I was being led to believe would cause a weight loss if I stayed off them. They are good for you in many ways that I hadn't known about. It was a much better read than I had planned on and healthier eating ideas.

... makes understanding dietary choices for a diabetic patient very easy to understand
This book makes understanding dietary choices for a diabetic patient very easy to understand . My friend for whom I did purchase the book said she had been enlightened by this information - and now finally she did not feel so deprived and restricted in food choices- all the while controlling her blood sugar levels. I would highly recommend to all who are trying to understand food choices and how it affects your blood sugar.Excellent resource book .

Very Helpful Resource
I have been a Type 2 Diabetic for several years and just recently had to start using mealtime Insulin and was wanting to count carbs more often for better blood sugar control. This is a very good, easy book to get information from. Very understandable information that is not confusing at all. I would recommend this for a starter book to all that want to control carbs.

Carb-counting with gastroparesis
Lots of nice little tips and useful info in an inexpensive book. I learned a lot, this coming from someone who's been diabetic for years but never did carb counting and so felt new to the experience and somewhat frightened. It is helping me with my gastroparesis.

Not for me!
I found this book very confusing - all American weights and food groups. There are other much better carb counters more suitable to the British market
