I located this charming item to commemorate the 2023 release into Sydney's Royal National Park--for the first time in over fifty years--of several platypus females, with the hope of beginning to repopulate the animal's decimated numbers. Having had the great pleasure to observe a live platypus at an Australian sanctuary several years ago, I was moved by the real very existence of this unique and memorable creature. Yes, it must be seen alive to be believed, and if it were to go extinct it might become the stuff of fairytales. Its extinction would be a great blow to our collective existence. So I'll hang on to hope for the re-establishment of the platypus in Australia's wild.
