Necessary Evil

This book is a perfect example of “Books are better than Movies”. I’ve read this book 3x already within the past 8 years . I’m excited bout the audio version. This book is very significant for me because it aligned with my spiritual awakening, and being from the same neighborhood you’re reading a book about is different for me, this book has all the elements that never get old. I was so mad when the book was finished………..it’s that good.

This is an awesome book which absorbs one's attention completely and brings alive the drug trade culture of the mid 90's in New York City. Having been in corporate management and consulting, this is an aspect of life with which I was totally unfamiliar even though I have lived in Brooklyn both during and after the period during which the action takes place. The characters are very real and, despite the understandable rampant violence and "necessary evil", one finds one's self identifying with the characters and wondering how one would have acted if one was born into similar conditions on the street. It is psychologically brilliant and consistent to such a degree that one really gets to "know" the characters and how they think and how they react to different situations. As one reads the book, one feels as if one is living the story real-time through the eyes and ears of the main characters as their story unfolds dynamically through various unexpected twists and turns. One is kept constantly at the metaphorical edge of one's chair and literally cannot put the book down. This is must-reading for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of an aspect of life not known to many as the descriptions, dialogues, and fast-paced action help one to visualize what is happening and, more importantly, feel what is happening as it is happening. Despite the violence, one develops an empathetic attachment to the characters that can only be realized by reading the book. I have already recommended this book to some of my friends who are planning to read it as well.

Great storyline, suspenseful events! I enjoyed reading this book and recommend everyone to get a copy!

A few editorial errors here and there, but once you get over that, it's an engrossing narrative of street life and coming of age. It adeptly captured what it must have been like to live in Brooklyn and the Bronx in the early 90s and had enough suspense and drama to captivate until the very end.

THIS BOOK IS HARD TO PUT DOWN I KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT COULD TO RELATE TO JAMAAL ..THIS IS MUST READ FOR ALL AGES ..THANK YOU ...k .HAYES
