Hal Galper studied at Berklee College before going on the road with the likes of Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, and the Brecker Brothers. He was Cannonball Adderley's last piano player until the saxophonist's untimely death in 1975. Firmly rooted in the bop tradition but open to new adventures, he presents this 1977 all-star quartet featuring Japan's trumpet genius Terumasa Hino, free jazz veteran Cecil McBee on bass, and the one and only Tony Williams (ex-Miles Davis, ex-Lifetime). Review: Hard-driving modern jazz from Hal Galper’s Quartet in 1977. - The overlooked jazz pianist/composer Hal Galper(1938-2025) recorded this excellent quartet album for Enja in New York on February 15, 1977 with Japanese trumpeter/flugelhornist, Terumasa Hino, bassist Cecil McBee & drummer Tony Williams. The seven memorable tracks(including an alternative take) are all Galper originals apart from Thelonious Monk’s, ‘Bemsha Swing’. With impressive playing from Galper & Hino supported by a superb rhythm section, the hard-driving modern jazz on ‘Now Hear This’ deserves to be more widely known.

I had this on vinyl, and bought this thinking the remaster would be even better. It isn't. The sound on the vinyl has such a punch -- Tony Williams has a presence that is just not there in the cd. Galper and Hino are tamed on the remaster; and this is a hard driving hard bop album where everyone really stretches out. Get it for the music, but realize enja dropped the ball with the sound.

Yeah!

Really good record from 1977. All amazing musicians. Hal Galper playing similar to McCoy Tyner on this. Tony Williams amazing as usual. Mr. Hino on trumpet reminds one of Woody Shaw or Freddie Hubbard. Incredible bass playing too. Some fine compositions. What's not to like?
