Wwe: Owen - Hart Of Gold

If you like The Golden Era of WWF/WWE then you need this.
Owen Hart was one of those wrestlers who wasn't a favourite. He was just there doing his thing in the era of WWF/WWE that matters the most to me. The Pre-Atttude Era aka The Golden Era. The mid 80's to the mid 90's. That was the biggest draw for me with this DVD set. It covers a selection of matches from Owen's early WWF days up until his sad demise at ringside. DVD 1 is a documentary that lasts a little over an hour. Interviews with a range of wrestlers past and present. As well as in ring or out side the ring stories of Owen's antics. Bret (his brother) was talking about him in a match he had with Owen. You see the camera looking down from the ceiling to the middle of the ring. As Bret spoke the camera showed you Bret on the mat with Owen standing above him. You see Bret pointing a finger at Owen and saying something we can't hear. Like he's telling Owen off for doing something he shouldn't have. I don't think we've ever seen that angle and Bret doing that until now. Most camera work is ring side. Not birds eye view like that little snippet. The documentary goes by far too quickly. I really enjoyed it. The matches are a good selection as well. The more of the golden era WWE releases the better. It's the only side to the company I'll buy and support.

A real story of a great man
Some people were fans of Owen Hart, this is a great way of hearing about the man as well as getting some great matches on disc.

I Agree with Brett, this could have been so much better
The Dvd isn't that great I felt, the matches featured were very forgettable and there is only a few of the highly rated matches included. The king of the ring Vs 123 kid for me should be on this. The documentary side of things was a bit lacking too, I saw an interview with Brett about this release and he said Martha had put blockers on a lot of things so it isn't what it could have been. For me they should have included the full raw tribute show on one of the dvds too

Solid tribute to a great man
So here we are then, Owen Hart finally getting the WWE DVD/Blu Ray treatment that he surely richly deserves. The debate will go on as to whether this should exist (Owens widow Martha certainly feels that it shouldn't) but this is a review of the actual content we've been given. What's presented is pretty much the standard modern day WWE package - a 67 minute doc, 40+ minutes of bonus stories, 21 matches (2 exclusive to Blu) and the tribute videos that various superstars recorded for the Raw episode which aired the night after Owens tragic death (these are also Blu exclusive). The doc is a warm tribute to Owen with plenty of footage of the man himself, both in the ring and out. It flashes through his life and career in double quick time so there's no dwelling on controversies or more significant events. That's what's expected these days so it doesn't feel like too much of a disappointment anymore. There's plenty of relevant contributions from various Hart family members (including Bret obviously) alongside many WWF superstars of Owens era who are keen to share their stories and impressions of him. That becomes the real feel of the doc in the end, it's about him as a man and the impact he had on those around him.The bonus stories extend and elaborate on these thoughts and range from amusing to touching and back again. The matches are a mix of well known classics, other solid PPV outings and a few other little rarities. This is a run down of the match content with a few observations....05/12/86 - Owen Hart v Viet Cong Express #1 - Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship Match - Old school mat wrestling here. Solid stuff with the odd glimpse of Owen magic.??/05/88 - Owen Hart v Makhin Singh - North American Heavyweight Championship - Not the full match but what we get is fairly all action (with our boy doing all the work).10/09/88 - Blue Blazer v George South - A 2 minute squash match. A good one though.08/05/89 - Blue Blazer v Mr Perfect - Quality little match here, I expected nothing less with these two in there together.16/03/91 - Owen Hart v Mark Kyle - A short one which is really here for the novelty value of seeing Owen in a WCW ring.28/08/93 - Owen Hart v Shawn Michaels - IC Title - Bright and breezy but short with a lame finish. There's better to come from these two on this set.20/03/94 - Owen Hart v Bret Hart - A technical masterpiece. Seen it many times before but it's always worth another spin.19/06/94 - Owen Hart v Razor Ramon - King of the Ring Final - A distinctly unmemorable match but really it's all about the result and then the gloriously absurd coronation ceremony that follows.17/08/94 - Owen Hart v Bret Hart - WWF Title - Lumberjack Match - Another good effort from the brothers which includes the usual lumberjack shenanigans and the bitter/sweet moment where Owen is actually declared WWF champ.28/05/95 - Owen Hart v Nick Barberri - Exhibition Match - Short squash match in a fairly unique setting.23/07/95 - Owen Hart & Yokozuna v The Allied Powers - WWF Tag Titles - Pretty lively and fun tag scrap which is at its best when Owen and Davey hit the ring.18/02/96 - Owen Hart v Shawn Michaels - #1 Contender for the WWF Title - A cracking fast paced bump fest.06/01/97 - Owen Hart v Mankind - Relatively brief TV match but they still squeeze in a few weapons and some good fun.03/03/97 - Owen Hart v The British Bulldog - European Title Tournament Final - What a beauty this is, one of the greatest ever Raw matches. Brilliant, just brilliant.28/04/97 - Owen Hart v Rocky Maivia - IC Title - Rockys still pretty green so this isn't the best or most memorable match but it's solid enough. It's all about getting more gold into the Hart family of course and the post match celebration is hilarious.06/07/97 - The Hart Foundation v Stonecold Steve Austin, Ken Shamrock, Goldust & The Legion of Doom - A famous match here and rightfully so. Everything about this is electric, from the building shaking wrestler entrances all the way to the final bell and post match celebration. An awesome roller coaster ride.26/01/98 - Owen Hart v Goldust - European Title - A 5 minute match for the European Title where the European champ (Triple H) isn't actually involved. Goldust does his best Tripper impersonation instead. Yep, we're in the Attitude Era.26/07/98 - Owen Hart v Ken Shamrock - Dungeon Match - Totally ridiculous but bizarrely brilliant short, stiff brawl. I can watch Kens head go through that ceiling all day long.27/09/98 - Owen Hart v Edge - Really good example of a PPV opener. Fast paced and energetic stuff that gets the crowd pumping. The next couple are exclusive to the Blu Ray....30/12/88 - Blue Blazer v Red Rooster - This almost turns into a minor epic. Yeah it's got a fair amount of stalling and rest holds but I rather enjoyed it.19/06/94 - Owen Hart v 123 Kid - Fantastic while it lasts but it really doesn't last very long. Then the set finishes with the tribute videos from the 24/05/99 episode of Raw. These run for 47 minutes and are a sad yet poignant way to sign off.

I have a feeling its a knock-off...
There was not a sticker that showed it to be an authentic product. Ah well. I couldn't find it anywhere else so it is what it is.

RIP Owen Hart/Blue Blazer
A terrible day for wrestling and it’s fans was approached very thoughtfully without getting too mushy. Well done. What the hell was Owen thinking? Finish the Tombstone pile driver on your knees. Even I know that.

I (@STAMPEDE, 1986)OWEN HART vs. Makhan Singh (@STAMPEDE, 1988)THE BLUE BLAZER vs. GEORGE SOUTH (@WWE 1988)THE BLUE BLAZER vs. MR.
