An ideal book for budding young scientists
Having browsed through it in a bookshop, I bought this book for my grandson because it has one of the best sets of practical experiments I've seen. In addition, each exercise has a simple account of the science behind the procedure, so it's not just "gee-whiz". The exercises vary from the very simple to the quite elaborate, and in some cases (as a retired scientist myself) I found myself wishing for the facilities of a workshop. However, given the number of offerings, this is no great problem, and a bright child will enjoy helping with the construction of gadgets, and even more so in performing the experiments personally. Highly recommended.

Sensible science experiments for children.
This is a large book. It measures 12" high, 10 1/4" wide and over 1/2" thick. Anyone who has ever read a DK book will be familiar with there standard fare. DK books feature large, very high quality, full colour photographs on a good thick glossy paper. In general, the photographs make the book, but DK is never short on information either. This book provides clear step by step details for 85 experiments, as well as information on how each experiment works, and the scientific principles involved. When this book arrived, my sons both sat down quite happily to look through and help choose which experiments to try first. This is not our first science book, and we do like messy science, so I'm afraid we had already tried a great many of the experiments, but they immediately found one they were both desperate to try. This experiment requires dry ice, as did the next experiment they chose, so I told them I would have to see if we could order any online. I spent hours searching through the net, and the best price I found was ยฃ50 + postage. This was out of my price range, so I'm afraid we will never be trying the very best experiments. We found other experiments we wanted to try. Some worked, some did not. I also found a number of items that were not really household items were required, such as a black light. We bought one just for an experiment, but ours was not as powerful as the one used for illustration, and the results nowhere near so striking. Other materials the average household may not have to hand include alum and glycerine, but these are not hard to come by. The majority of experiments to use common household items, and the majority are easy enough to reproduce, as long as you don't expect quite the same results as in the illustrations.Overall, we really enjoyed this book, there are plenty of fun, hands on ways to learn science, but as a home educator, I was already familiar with almost all of the experiments that we were able to do. I think it only fair to mention that almost all of these experiments can easily be found online for free, but then you don't have as much detailed information on the science behind it, or the lovely photos. Still, it is a fun resource for the children to thumb through on a rainy day and choose activities, and it does have a fair amount of educational value. My children are ages 3 and 7. While the 3 year old had fun with some of the experiments this book is best suited to older children. I would say age 5 at least with quite a lot of parental help. As far as reading level, I would put this at about age 8+ but I would not want children under 12 doing many of these experiments without adult supervision.

Good for lock down!
Easy to do experiments using ordinary things around the house. A good book filled with activities that adults can do with their little ones. Suitable for 8 year olds

Brilliant
Brilliant - kept an 11 year old and 8 year old occupied for lots of summer holiday days! There were just a few things that were beyond our store cupboard such as the UV light. But mostly so long as we had plenty of ice we were in luck!!

Good for ideas
Good for ideas. Some use special chemicals. I wanted a home friendly experiment book. Using to supplement ideas for home science experiments. I teach science and my ideas were drying up !

Fabulous book for 7+ children. This has been my 'go-to' birthday present for all of my son's friends. The text, illustrations and experiments are clear, informative and, most importantly for kids, fun and exciting! Well worth the money.
