Don't Speak French? Buy the album anyway!
I got into Stromae's music after I watched the music video for "Papaoutai". I don't speak French, but the website Lyrics Translate allowed me to read the lyrics in English. His songs may seem catchy and dancable, but there is much more to it than you might think. "Papaoutai", for example, is an autobiographical song about a young boy dealing with an absent father. Another favorite song, "Human a 'leau" deals with ethnocentricism (the belief that one culture is better than everyone else's).Besides the lyrics, the production is pretty solid. Not only do you have dance pop mixed with hip-hop and electronica, but you also have Carribean rhythms and rumba. Most of the production will make you get up and dance and maybe think too if you understand and pay attention to the lyrics.A final notable aspect of this project is Stromae's singing and rapping ability. Vocally, highlights include "Formidable" and "Quand C'est?". The former has Stromae pretending to be drunk and singing as a bitter and lonely man. The emotion in his voice is very moving here. Meanwhile, "Quand C'est?" has Stromae singing in a lovely airy high-pitched voice at the chorus in addition to his usual gravelly vocals. When it comes to his rapping ability, it shines its brightest on "Human a 'leau". Here he shows swagger and fast-paced flow that is enhanced by the hard-hitting production and thought-provoking lyrics.Overall, this was a fantastic album! If you are tired of the same old generic pop songs with no meaning and you don't mind it being in French, start using the site Lyrics Translate and buy this!

One of the best albums of 2013/2014
Racine Carree (Square Root) is one of the best albums I have listened to in awhile. The songs are original, fresh, clever, and Paul has far exceeded his first album "Cheese" with this brilliant Sophmore album. One of the best albums of 2013/2014 in my book. Not only will you get hooked on the singles he has released but the other tracks are equally strong, diverse, and inspirational. Stromae truly catered to his audience on this one.His style and fusion of music not only tells a story but captivates you track by track. I can't get enough of this album. I listen to it pretty much every day, despite language barrier. Not only can you listen to his music in the privacy of your home but at work, one the road, etc. In fact, I'm constantly blasting his music in the car. It's a truly a car banger!Sweet hooks, cool melodies, and thoughtful lyrics make for a great album. It's becoming a classic to me!

You don't have to know French to get something out of Stromae's music!
I'm ignorant. I don't know any French, but after an introduction to Stromae by a Belgian woman I met in a Montreal hostel, I found I couldn't stop thinking about the music video to "Papaoutai." The music is catchy, the dancing so expressive, and I could gather what the song was about from the video. But it wasn't until I got back to the States that I realized how many awesome songs Stromae has. "Ta Fete" is really upbeat, great for running or working out to, and I love the French-inspired melody of "Tous les Memes." I bought the entire album, and I'm so glad I did. I am in love with it and can't get it out of my head! It's no wonder Stromae is becoming an international sensation.I'm looking forward to interpreting and analyzing the lyrics because if Wikipedia is any indication, this artist has a lot of depth in the topics he sings about.

A beautiful different taste to music!!!
OOOOOOHHHHHHHH MMMMMMYYYYYY GGGGGOOOOOODDDDDDNNNEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely, Absolutely Breathtaking. If you have never heard of this guy, like myself, until I listened to a cover of Papaoutai from Pentatonix, it's okay. He has revived music to how it should be. I kind of feel bad saying this, but not really; he is the best rapper I have heard in a long time. Touching on topics that many probably won't touch on. This is a gift that many pay to get, but that he receives naturally. Just know that there isn't a song that you won't dislike at all. And that is coming from an English speaking person. Take a look at his concert on his Youtube page to see the songs from this album. Your eyes will be opened to talent for sure. I can't wait for Stromae to come back with more.

Do not miss, a jewel...
Whoua, amazing guy! I have to admit as a French native living in the US since more than 20 years I do not follow the music in French. For the French speaking people, it is for me the new Jacques Brel. My review is probably not adequate as I fall in the category 50-59 years old.But catchy music amazing lyrics on very important topics. Give it a try and watch the video on utube... My least favorite "humain a l'eau" my favorite difficult they really are all good but "quand c'est" is really good.

An absolute gem of a cd!!
I simply can't believe this artists hasn't hit it big in America. Oh wait, he sings in French... yeah that's why. It's a shame because it's amazing music regardless of knowing the language. I love the rhythms and the lyrics. He's a true poet! This is intelligent dance music with something powerful to express. His day will definitely come in America soon enough. If you're not familiar with him, please check him out in YouTube and judge for yourself.

Alors maestro!
Better than Cheese in my view, this has an eclectic mix of beats and dance themes, dealing with topics from Fatherhood and twitter to cancer, using wordplays and rhythms from opera to Latin and African sounds. If you like dance music then this is guaranteed to get you moving. The tunes speak for themselves and if you don't speak French there are extensive translations available for free online. This album is well worth the price, and you will find yourself recalling the tunes and if you speak French, recalling the words too! I await the next album with enthusiasm, for a different approach and philosophy which mark Stromae out as a superb musician and writer.

my favourite album of the year
I love this! Fantastic dance tunes, clever lyrics, great beats and altogether 'sensass'! I have been using Stromae's music in my French classes to inspire young learners and we all agree 'Papaoutai' is amazing. Excellent played in the car with the volume UP! Proof that there is a point to learning another language- as I keep telling hordes of reluctant teenagers- as if one was needed.
