When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber. Review: Beautiful - Plot - excellent - a few detective cliches but I feel they are probably deliberate and a play on the genre. Ink-work and Art Work - B E A utiful to quote Truman. Dialogue - excellent, zingy and genuinely funny Whether you are into comics or not this is an excellent purchase. Review: Once upon a time there was a comic and it was awesome. - I realise I am rather late to the Fables party, but am definitely glad I finally arrived. The simple premise of fairy tale creatures living amongst the 'mundies' in contemporary New York seems ripe for a kids book, however this is far from child's play. A dark and rich story of murder and intrigue unfolds within the beautiful artwork that has at once the feeling of classic illustrations and modern comic art at the same time. There are a few moments as the Big Bad Wolf prowls through his list of suspects where the story can be a little clunky, although I am convinced these teething issues will be ironed out in the future issues. Overall this is a fantastic book, and hopefully series. I'll be sure to let you know soon.

Even if you're not interested in the whole series, buy this book
All the 5 issues collected in this book are penciled by Lan Medina, this alone would worth the price! His artwork is so refreshing, not in the sense that is über modern, but because it authentic old fashioned. It is just so easy for the eyes, very detailed and nice character depiction. I'm, simply in love with his work. The story itself is very well written, there are some hilarious moment in it (ex. Pinokkio) and the 5 chapters make a complete whole. The pages are printed on matte paper, which is not my favourite, but it produces nice quality prints and goes well with Lan's artwork and with the colouring used. [Side note: there is a Fairest teaser at the end of the book -- I don't have the book yet, but I do hope they use glossy paper for that, since that style needs the vibrant colour finish! ] I highly recommend this book.

recently discovered
After playing the new telltale game - the wolf among us I got captivated by the world and left wanting more only to discover the actual series the game was based on! A fantastic read for mature readers using old fairy tales and some nudges towards big franchises (oz and narnia) as being a part of the world. The whole thing wrapped up in an almost noir style detective story! Amazing

A little disappointing.
I'm not aiming for an in-depth review here, I just wanted to share how I also was quite disappointed with this. I was really intrigued by the premise of traditional folklore characters living in a gritty city setting, and how this would be expressed in graphic novel form. I did think there were plenty of great character ideas, particularly the development (or breaking down) of the relationships between all the "happy couples" such as Beauty and the Beast and Snow White and Prince Charming. There's lots clever little details like this that twist and subvert our familiar conceptions of fairytales (Solinas' review offers a thorough summary), and these did encourage me to keep reading through the whole thing. But I thought the story was tedious and dull - there's all this possibility for something totally unique, and all this intrigue surrounding these characters, but it turns out to be just another murder mystery, nothing much better than the average episode of CSI! I also would have liked slightly more interesting, varied and stylised illustrations, but that's just a matter of personal preference as I feel this way about a lot of comic art. I'm aware that more of the history will probably be revealed in the other volumes, but I just thought it was a little strange to start such an intriguing series with this story, although it's worth a read to see the amusing little details that hark back to our childhood bed-time stories.

Good read
I hesitate to give this five stars because such a rating should only be given to something that is near perfect but that should give people no doubt that this is a fantastic read. Imaginative, colourful, amusing and interesting, this book places the standard genre of detective story into an extraordinary setting yet keeps the basic plot interesting. Well worth a read!

Interesting read
I thought it was good, wasn’t expensive and if your going on holiday and like a comic, I think this is great it’s small enough to take up virtual no space in your bag! And kept me entertained on the flight the story and artwork is impressive
