Learn OSI then think.
I owe a lot to Todd, not that he knows this.I took my Net+ on order of my manager whilst working at Pearson, over 10 years ago now, but for me was a catharsis. After A+, how can you really understand what is involved in running an enterprise network?Well, in truth this book really scared me. I needed to get a passing exam grade quickly as also needed to teach this to other people, so learnt it quickly. If you have ever had to learn something quickly you will understand the urgency and the need. I objectified the facts for the exam and with the knowledge of the OSI model managed to make this work for me. I then read the revision guide (an abridged version of this book), took several Measureup tests then took and aced the exam.I now swear by the OSI model.TTFNMatthew

I would give a 5 because its a beautifully written and well informative book but I've noticed some of the end of Chapter questions are alittle "weird" Simply because they give you the answers, say the answer is A but in the explanation it says A and D are right but only says A is right officially if that makes sense? And Some of the questions don't say (Choose two) but in the answers, it says two are right. It also doesn't say check all that apply on a few but others it does.Apart from that its a really good book! Its filled in alot of blanks for me :)

Excellent study material
Good book. Very well defined and descriptive in nature. The author took very good care to put everything in a nutshell.

Not bad. Needs improvement.
In short I passed (I have prior network knowledge that helped also) but there are a few problems with the material that should be mentioned. Some of the study questions don't give the correct answer (e.g. which of these is NOT a PUBLIC ip address? and 3 of the answers are private IP addresses with the only public ip address being the desired answer). Not a big deal to someone that has a strong understanding of the material from prior knowledge but a new network person might be mislead. He also teaches that ipsec is tunneling protocol which is not true. Ipsec often works with tunneling protocols to offer security that they lack but is not in and of itself a tunneling protocol( see sybex comptia security + study guide by Emmett Dulaney pg 91). Again, a small detail but what if this misinformation is the last bit that leads an individual to fail the exam?My final complaint is that the book felt loaded in some chapters. I think it could be beneficial to break up some of the chapters a bit more in order to offer a new learner a more defined line between the topics so they aren't left with 50 pages of new material and trying to understand how they are going to compartmentalize this information in a logical way.Would I recommend this book? With a bit of hesitation and a little warning, yes.

Great study guide - a good jumping-off point for further study!
First time getting back into networking after a long hiatus. I've found it really good for keeping me on track for certification - but there are definitely sections where I've found important underlying concepts being grazed over. I find things easier to remember if I understand the underlying concepts and not every concept is fully explained here, which makes sense considering the goal of this book. It's easy to find supplemental material online so no worries there. Again I find myself using this book as my guide to keeping me on track, rather than being the ultimate repository of networking information, and it's doing a great job. There are a few spots where he talks about the difference between real-world vs. what you need to know to get certified but isn't so relevant in modern practice, which is great. If anything there should be even more of this! Would make it even more useful as a general learning tool, vs.just a certification-prep tool. But overall this book has served as a great jumping off point. Well written, and generally accurate. Lots of prep questions. Recommended!

I'm already CompTIA Network+ certified since 2006. I am re-certifying to gain the "CE" designator. I used this very same book back then for my studies, and this book contains about 35-40% more information. The book is easy to read and well laid out. The online resources that come with the book alone are worth the money. You can retake the chapter tests & practice tests online repeatedly. The online flash cards help immensely too. The book is downloadable in PDF & ebook formats for reading offline. The virtual lab simulator offered is somewhat anemic and I found little use for it.I scheduled myself to do a chapter a day, there are 20 chapters, but I got stuck in two chapters for 2-3 days each, and remember I'm already NET+ certified! It's like everything else, if you don't use it you lose it, and some material learned you just don't use. You forget it! Long story short, it took me four weeks, 28 days, to read the book, study, and do all the tests.I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to become NET+ certified. Use it and at least one other book to get a different prospective of the same material.

A solid buy. Use this in tandem with other free online resources.
I like it. Finished the book a couple of weeks ago (I was also taking a Networking class and we used this book as supplemental material). Would definitely recommend this for anyone studying for the Net+ exam. Still you should also be using online resources such as Professor Messer videos and ExamCompass online practice exams.

A lot of very helpful material.
A lot of material with plenty of exercises. This is also an excellent reference guide to have around the desk even after having used it for it's original purpose. This is my second book I purchase from Lammle and I must say I am not disappointed. You will definitely want to compliment this guide with a professional video course, which there are plenty available online. My only complaint is that the simulation labs are really lacking content.

After receiving my A+, the N+ is the next cert in line. I read the A+ textbook from the same author so, at this point, I am use his writing format and question style so I decided to get the N+ from the same author. So far so good and I am only reading the PDF version. The textbook itself is the size of a mini modern dictionary so that's just too bulky for me to carry around. When the time gets near to take the exam, I'm sure I'll utilize all the practice exams, flash cards, etc

Like another reviewer said, the book has been rewritten so many times it is no longer cohesive. At the end of what seems like every paragraph the author says he'll explain the topic more in detail in another section or chapter. If it was just explained fully when it was first mentioned, the book would be smaller since there's so much redundant blanket or summarization text that doesn't need to be in the book. There were also quite a few spelling errors. Subnetting is covered in this book as well when it's not on the test and it's explained in a way I couldn't really grasp so I ended up learning on YouTube. I don't really think some of these problems the author has control over necessarily. I ended up failing the test by 40 points and I would not recommend this book. I have read the sybex A+ and Security+ books and passed those exams with a score of about 800. Professor Messer's cheat sheet prepared me more for this exam than this 800+ page book. Spend your money on another book.

I would be hesitant to recommend this book
It has a lot of information. But, it's overwhelming, and at times not fully explained. I also found that the questions at the the end o fhte chapters have multiple answers, but the question doesn't specify this. If you ask me a question I expect there to be one answer in a multiple choice question, unless otherwise specified. It's normal to view this way. I also don't appreciate it doesn't explain why the other multiple choice questions are wrong. It just tells you with little explanation. I would be hesitant to recommend this book

Good book
I just started reading. I would like for once a study book would just give the facts instead of rambling on. This is a study book not a college book that needs a magnitudes of explanations.
