After I connect this unit, can I use the remote control of the firestick to control the volume?

yes, your remote control works the same as before. I have connected the device to external speakers set that have volume control and amplifier. The audio adapter works both with fiber optic and HDMI ARC.

Can this extract audio from an hdmi capable that is plugged into the hdmi output of source equipment?

this hdmi arc extractor It is to extract audio from the HDMI port that supports ARC function to the fiber/coaxial/RL channels/3.5 jack output sound, you need to confirm whether your HDMI port has ARC function to output to corresponding receiving device. If without ARC function, please check ASIN: B06XDNJ6RM (supports 1080p) or B06ZYN46VK (supports 4K), which can extract audio directly from the hdmi port.
