The cap is made mostly out of plastic but with a stainless steel insert and a silicone gasket. The details for the product are a little misleading when they boast that "the cap ensures your drinks never touch plastic", while the only material listed in the details is "stainless steel" or ""Brushed stainless steel". Sure it probably does reduce microplastic exposure (when its not leaking), but it doesn't eliminate it completely. When the plastic cap interlocks with hard stainless steel on and off, the friction alone from that pretty much guarantees I'm getting some plastic in my body when I sip, so what's the point? This cap also leaks consistently, so it's not leak proof for me- I'm not the only person with a leak issue.

My wide-mouth Klean Kanteen bottle leaked after many years of use. The rubber ring was worn. I couldn’t find a similar top, but decided to give this a try. It fits very well to my water bottle, and I am happy I could save it from going to the dumpster- the reason for using a reusable water bottle in the first place.
