Seijun Suzuki's The Taisho Trilogy [Blu-ray]

Seijun 's films should be introduced more in Britain. Not only as an art film legend, but also a mesmerizer for young film fans. Great with English subtitles.

Nice transfer of the original.. has a bit of noise and green tinge but the film is the same way so you're getting 1:1 hereThe small softcover book that comes with it is amazingly well done *thumbs up*

Seriously bizarre, self indulgent, art house twaddle, mostly incomprehensible for western audiences due to lacking exposure to the various cultural references. All the films are set during the "Taisho" period in Japanese history during the earlier part of the 20th century, when art and liberalism briefly flourished prior to the rise of nationalism. The films are all based around some kind of artistic "muse" , for Zigeunerweisen it is the classical composition of the same name, for Kagero-za it is Kyoka Izumi, an obscure Japanese novelist, and for Yumeji it is the Japanese artist Takehira Yumeji. The films have similarities in style and all have a fairly comic tone and are visually experimental, almost childishly so, and low on plot. Safe to say, none of the films really did much for me but im sure the director and cast had a ball. Not recommended to anyone other than serious arthouse cinema buffs.
