Out of the box. Do you have everything you need to attach a flash and shoot?

There is no grid to buy separate that I know of. Look into the kit that comes with one.

would this work inside a gymnasium taking prom portraits?

Yes the light is a little sharp because of the 32 inches the larger softboxes would give you a softer light
