Set the ps2 to component input, and my LG tv is saying invalid input?

You will need to set the PS2's component output to the right setting; it defaults to RGB which not many TVs support. You'll need to set it to YPbPr.

You can do this without an image output by following this series of button presses to 'fly blind' to the setting. Make sure to leave a few seconds between each input to ensure it has gone through and menus aren't loading.
Turn on the PS2 with no disc in the tray, then press the following buttons in sequence; Down, X, Down, Down, Down, X, Right, X.
This should then set the output to YPbPr

I've bought this cable but it came with six (not 5 as pictured) plugs. A Green, red, blue and yellow one and two black ones. Help?

It's probably so you can use it through the basic composite (yellow video, red and white audio) or component (3 video, rgb and audio).

am i gonna be able to get sound using just 3 cables? also is ntsc/pal gonna be an issue or will this strip the signal and just let my tv sort it out?

Hi if the 3 cables you mean coloured green, red & blue (Y,PB,PR) these are component video signals that do not carry audio sounds, However when paired with the red & white RCA these do carry audio sound.  I use mine to upgrade playstation 2 graphics on a modern tv for example.  Some people have had issues with no sound I believe, mine works fine, hope this helps you.

Component cables are corrupted sometimes, better supported and higher quality, 
1080i,720p,576i/p, as settings need to be changed PS2 needs to select 'component' output and plug in component py/pb/pr leads to check signal is being received, be careful as you need to change back if the leads don't work, check the option is on revert before plugging out plain SCART/plain A/V. Or the console doesn't like middle def, let it go…?!?
