The light at the first setting is nice and bright - just right for doing homework, then there are two dimmer settings - both of which are very usable. However the beam is not very wide so it's best for a reading or desk light rather than one to give light to a whole room. We also found it quite unstable (being tall and thin) so easily knocked over. In fact we accidentally nudged the table it was on with a day of putting it there and it fell off the table and the light cracked.
