JHS Hornby Descant Recorder

It's a recorder. It's well made, cheap and essential for any British child growing up as it's part of the curriculum in a lot of school music lessons. This doesn't take away from the fact that when your child is starting out on this wind instrument it sounds incredibly like somebody scratching their fingernails down a chalk board to the untrained ear. Still, that's not to take anything away from this recorder, which is ideal as a first instrument especially at such a cheap price. It could be worse, he could be learning violin.

I remember playing the recorder as a kid an absolutely loving it. I decided to get 2 of these as a way of introducing my children to the basics of reading music and being able to produce a tune using an instrument other than their "delightful" singing voices. The recorder itself is well made and comes with all the extra little bits needed - a plastic wallet type case, a small pot of vaseline and a stick for poking up a cloth to clean inside. The children love playing them and then faffing around cleaning them out afterwards. I am sure I will learn to love them again once they get the hang of it enough to stop producing torturous, ear piercing squeaks (not the fault of the recorder as I have verified they work by playing it as well).

I purchased it for my kids and they are very happy with it... recommend it... there are expensive products out there but value for money..

bought for a son who is at that stage at school where they delightfully decide to irritate our ears by teaching our children how to play the recorder, oh the joys. Still this recorder is great quality, comes in a little storage pouch with a little pot of grease and a cleaning rod, also a sheet with some tips. my son is happy, im happy i didnt have to pay a fortune and i wont deny i couldnt resist having a little squeal on the thing while reminiscing about my own school days. many thanks and well recommended for everyone else in the same position!

This is a good value for money beginner's instrument. It is well made, looks good, sounds fine and easily dismantles for cleaning.

I bought three of these for my home educated children thinking that wouldn't it be great for them to learn a musical instrument that is such an integral part of primary education in the UK? I almost IMMEDIATELY regretted buying these once they arrived. I have three children and the noise was deafening. Am keeping the recorders and sending back the children! (The recorders work fine, great quality for the price.)

Bought more than one as presents. I knew they were like the ones they have at school, so was confident they were the real thing, and not just a toy. Ideal for learning to play the recorder, good value for money, and easy to clean.

I bought this recorder to replace one lost at school, and was rather disappointed in the quality. This recorder only comes apart into two pieces and feels much less substantial than the Hornby recorder that we had before. We would have preferred a recorder that could be more twisted around in the third section to adjust to the reach of little fingers. However it provides a child with something to use in class. Not for those serious about their recorder in my opinion.
