The Boat That Rocked [DVD] (2009)

SO TRUE!
As one who was a teenager in the Pirate Radio era, I really enjoyed this as it was such an accurate reflection of the time. Living in Somerset at the time, I could only receive Radio Caroline, Radio London etc with difficulty and a 70' aerial wire! When the BBC only played less than an hour of pop music per day and the only alternative was Radio Luxembourg after dark, the impact which the pirates made cannot really be appreciated by those who weren't there.Perhaps too many characters in the movie, but the pomposity of the government was played very realistically. I'm sure people can recognise who represents Emperor Rosko, John Peel, Simon Dee, Dave Cash etc. on the ship - and the 2 hours flew by whilst I was watching the film!Of course the music was wonderful too!

The boat that sank
A generous critic might describe this film as a restrained version of factional events.Radio Caroline was I believe the basis for this storyline. Radio Caroline!! Pirate radio at its most gaudy; the compact seedbed of British rock n roll radio! and the cast has great promise. I had great expectations . But all foundered on this haphazard chaotic poorly scripted piece of tedium.Little by way of humour or character or storyline. Kenneth Branagh played his Home office minister totally straight. Not a hint of send-up. I wanted more Carry-on, more Python, more laughs! The running jole of Mr Twat would have sufficed once, but seemed to become the staple joke. Thin stuff.I could not bring myself to watch more than an hour of this twaddle. You have been warned.

It rocked my boat!
I must have seen this film 4 or 5 times now. If you are like me a child of the 60's and are feeling a bit blue, The Boat That rocked just may bring a smile to your face. 100% feel good factor. The DVD has some great bonus deleted scenes that were cut to shorten the film. Watch out for Jack Davenport playing a Twatt. Hilarious.

Good fun portrayal of sixties music piracy!
Excellent dvd, a very warm look at the radio piracy that existed in the early sixties, which a certain age group can relate to, especially myself!!I enjoy any film with Bill Nighy, actually they're all good in it, and although a light hearted romp, you do get some of the flavour of those times, and an overbearing angry medium of authority!!!

Very enjoyable
Very enjoyable. As an American I knew little about this very British solution to a censorship problem caused by the Government.Hard to believe that at the time Britain was the Rock capital of the world (Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc etc) the law was structured so that it was nearly impossible to listen to Rock music legally. The story is told in an intelligent and witty way.

Great british film
It's an awesome British classic. Great family film, it will keep everyone entertained. Just enough smut and dirtiness for the teens, but funny smut so not too embarrass the parents and not enough to offend grandma. I laughed out loud, I cried my eyes out. So did everyone else. An absolute must for all film buffs, and if you only own one film, this one covers all basis. Loved it, and not in the way I thought I would, just watch it, you'll see.
