MagMod Flash Modification Kit

Bought this for wildlife trip to Borneo in June 2019. Used it with Canon 70-200 II, and 1DX mk II. It is easy to set up and works well, but in some ways it works too well, as it needs distance to the subject to work optimally. At less than 10 metres, it will be far too bright, even with the flash power turned right down. At this distance, one is better advised to use the illuminating lamp alone. However, at greater than 20 metres, it comes into its own as it is sufficiently focused to work with a pro camera. But it is robust and certainly better than the competition. I have never used it during daylight for fill in flash.

It’s good but has its flaws. When attached to a flash and pulled out to maximum size it can force the flash head to drop. At first I thought the MagMod or flash wasn’t working but after a little trial and error realised it was causing the flash to drop thus pointing the concentrated light below the centre of the frame sometimes outside of the frame altogether. I fixed this by winding thick rubber round to support the head at the joint preventing it from drooping below 90 degrees.

The MagBeam is an excellent addition to my photographic kit, and the results when using this are far better than I had expected with really clear images in lowlight situations.

This bit of kit although a little expensive for what it is does the job first class. When taking photo of wildlife it certainly throws the lighting from flashlight onto the subject.

fantastic for getting close but when opened fully it drops the beam below where you are pointing but an adjustable bracket would fix this.

A great product, but from my perspective with one minor flaw. With the silicone hood fully extended, it will sag a bit, this can be remedied by adjusting the silicone grip on the flash so it's tilting a little upwards. A nicer solution would have been to add a third magnet on the top, the size of the magnets on the side could have been reduced to keep the weight unchanged. Overall, I prefer this over the Better Beamer.

it does just what you want it to do, fill light is great and the change of power works great.
