Selected Poems of John Keats: York Notes Advanced
B**.
One of the best of the series.
York notes, at both levels, vary in quality according to the writer. This one is first rate. Glennis Byron has done an excellent job in a relatively confined space. I have two minor caveats: the book is too closely argued for weaker examination candidates, who would do better with a simplified version and it is a pity that Helen Vendler's excellent book was not available to Ms. Byron at the time of writing. The study is very well organised, with a compressed portrait of Keat's life as well as early responses to the poems. It comes fully into its own in the individual studies of particular poems And the summary of critical approaches is valuable and quite provocative. Recommended wholeheartedly.

Far too complex for A Level students
I ordered this as I was tutoring students for A level. However it has proved totally unsuitable. It seems as if it has been written for a postgraduate dissertation rather than to help students come to a clear understanding of Keats and his poetry. The students have found the text extremely difficult. I totally agree that with them that the concepts are not presented in such a way as to guide them through the complexities of the poetry. I would suggest that teachers and students seek other guides. Further, that the publishers replace this with a guide that students would find accessible and thereby useful.

A Level Saviour
Keats was hard. This book helped so much. Buy it if you're struggling, or if you need any more help with understanding the long-winded romantic poetry that is Keats' work, this will be perfect for you.
