Excellent, but could do with a lid!
As usual a beautifully made, educational toy from Melissa and Doug. My 3 1/2 year old couldn't wait for me to unwrap it for her. The quality is excellent, with lovely pictures, plenty of letters and a variety of words to complete. Very helpful when trying to encourage letter recognition, phonics and learning to associate letters with simple words. The only downside is the lovely storage 'box' is more a storage 'tray', it has no lid! Every time my daughter gets the box from it's shelf, she spills a few letters, despite her being exceptionally careful. It's a shame that something as simple as a lid has been missed.

Great for my toddler with speech delay!
My toddler is due to start school soon but he has only been talking for a year so he still have quite a way to go with pronunciation and learning the alphabet so we’ve been using this and a book I ordered called getting ready for preschool by a.a GIRLING and it’s really helping him a lot. When reciting the abcs he does get a bit jumbled after G but that’s a massive improvement. His pronunciation of the words and letters are improving as well and it’s the type of learning he enjoys which is great as usually the homework from the speech therapist frustrates him because he’s bored but with this puzzle and the book he views it as play time so he absolutely loves it and annoys me by getting all the puzzle pieces out on the floor of the living room I cleaned 2 minutes ago!

The best toy I have ever bought for my son and excellent value!
My 3 year old son had showed an interest in the alphabet so I searched the internet for a suitable toy to promote his learning. This was an excellent purchase. He has had it for about a year now and he still plays with it every single day. At first he used the tiles included to learn how to spell the words then he began to use the letters to spell the words without the tiles and now he uses them to spell everything! Every letter of the alphabet is included which is not the case with other toys we have bought for him. My son finds words on his posters and on products and uses the letters to spell the words he finds. He can now spell loads of different words outloud and it is all thanks to the presentation and quality of this wonderful toy. It is what I would describe as an 'heirloom' toy which I will keep when he is older to give to his own children who I am sure will love it just as much as he does.

Inchworm? What's an inchworm?!
The pieces are sturdy and shouldn't easily break but we've had a few splinters of wood to deal with. Some of the words are questionable, inchworm being one of them, but I feel like it's been a useful teaching aid when helping my little one recognise both upper and lower case letters and teaching phonics.A point worth noting is that although the pieces are supplied in a sturdy wooden box, the floppy plastic lid which slides on the box is somewhat dangerous so we've taken that away.

very successful
Easter is always a problem when grand kid is special needs and diary intolerant. This toy was excellent for him instead of an easter egg. He loves his school and this was a perfect toy to help with his letters and spelling. He also loved it as he is really getting into learning his letters, and can sign them very well. It is a very good toy for co ordination too. It is excellent to help recognise words. I would say all reception kids would benefit from this excellent toy making learning fun.

Fantastic for preschoolers and beyond!
I love love love this beautiful set of first word puzzles! Beautiful colourful pictures, excellent choice of first words. Bought this for my 2 year old daughter, it's a great way to gently introduce letters to preschoolers in a fun way! Definitely not giving this toy away, it will be handed down generations! My only complaint was the lack of lid, so you do have to be extra careful not to loose the letters. But this is common with all Melissa and Doug puzzles, and thanks to other reviews, I was expecting the lack of lid - but the quality of the product far outweighs this very minor issue with packaging/storage of the puzzle.
