Are the pages in grids format

They 'could' be. I will explain... The pages are lined horizontally with a faint but solid line. They are also lined vertically with a faint but dashed line. So you can write on them like a normal notebook or you can use the verticals to help you draw, etc.

Do i need to buy a special pen to write on this with?

Hi Catherine, Not 'really', but I can give some guidance. Standard ballpoint pens work quite well on this type of non water-absorbing paper. Rollerball and water-soluble ink pens take ages to dry since they don't get absorbed into the paper so I would stay away from those. They will most likely smear. Marker pens with alcohol-type inks, like a Sharpie, for instance, work really well. Fisher Space Pens work fine but their ink can sometimes be a bit smeary in general, even on other papers. What also works really well is a Uni-ball Powertank, which is another write-anywhere pen.Pencils work too. I have tried a 2B pencil and it works great without cutting into the paper.
