TP-Link TL-WN823N Mini WiFi Dongle, USB WiFi Adapter for PC

Really good product. I like that it auto-loads its drivers by appearing as a virtual USB CD-ROM (this disappears once the drivers are installed). The extendable arm is also a nice touch and seems to help with signal strength. At first I had Wi-Fi issues where Windows showed “No internet” despite staying connected to the router. The problem wasn’t with the product but rather by the Virgin Media Hub 5 and its Channel Optimization feature. This constantly forces devices to hop between channels, which causes disconnections. How I fixed it: 1) Connect to the Wi-Fi normally with the password. 2) If you get “No internet,” restart the router (temporary fix). 3) Go to 192.168.0.1 and log in using the password on the bottom of the Hub 5. 4) Navigate to Advanced Settings → Wireless → Wireless Signal. 5) Under Smart WiFi, disable Channel Optimization. 6) For 2.4GHz, set Channel to Manual and choose Channel 6. 7) For 5GHz, set Channel to Manual and choose Channel 36. After this, the adapter performs excellently. My PC is one floor and two walls away from the router, and I’m getting around 90% of my 500 Mbit/s speed, far better than the powerline solution I was using before which was giving me 20%.

Installed on my mother's old Win 7 PC so I can use the internet when I visit even though she doesn't have her own internet connection. I use BT broadband at my own home and I'm able to use my account to access her neighbour's BT hotspot from my mother's PC. The adapter was easy to install and I used the software provided by TP-Link. The adapter picked up a good range of signals from my mother's neighbours (mostly p/w protected) and I could of used my mobile phone wireless tethering facility, but it was more convenient to use her neighbour's BT hotspot. It connected with no problems and I entered my BT details as required to get the connection. The adapter maintained the connection without requiring the password to be re-entered even after being switched off and on again. This is not my usual experience when using a BT hotspot, which normally requires the password to be re-entered if the connection is lost. I'm not sure if this is indicative of slightly questionable TP-Link software. With the adapter still connected to my mother's PC it seems that it's permanently connected to the neighbour's BT hotspot! Not what I expected at all.

Received quickly by post, well packaged. Came with a mini CD with installation software although the device didn't seem to need it as it immediately began working when plugged it. It would be worth checking if your router supports 5 GHz as it might be worth investing in the £14.95 5 GHz AC version of this USB Adaptor (with caveats). My speeds average out around 62 Mbps, I crossed referenced this with my phone and my phone had the same speed on the 2 GHz band, so it is performing as intended. I currently have a 200 Mbps subscription, on the 5 GHz band using my phone (S6 Edge) I was getting around 160 Mbps. You might be wondering then why I didn't go the the 5 GHz version, my reasons for this are that 5 GHz typically seems to have poorer signal quality over distance and lower penetration through certain materials, I live in an post war house that has a lot of steel beams through the structure and my 5 GHz signal, although faster tends to be less reliable and weaker. In summary I would say the best option for someone in my position would be to go for the 2.4 GHz version, if however you're router will be in the same room as your computer or perhaps only on the other side of a stud wall, go for the 5 GHz. I have had this adaptor for a while now and performance has been superb, the signal has not dropped at all since I got it. For the record I am using Windows 8. Great price for a quality product from a trusted brand.

I purchased this dongle specifically for my spare PC for Windows 7 as another brand dongle did not work, it came in a nice package box with a installation CD, the application was easy to install. My old PC was revived and I found that worked as well with a browser called Supermium, allowing Google and most application to run smoothly.

***Update about 4 weeks later*** I downloaded the specific driver from the company (by default it had been using whatever driver Windows used). Initially this did seem to have improved things slightly. It was actually quite difficult to get hold of and use this driver: poorly designed user setup. Unfortunately, using the manufacturer's driver does NOT solve the problems. I still get dropped connections, and I still find that whereas my phones, TV, etc., have no problems picking up a full-speed Wifi signal from the router, this thing doesn't: all too often it clocks 2 Mbps, and occasionally drops Wifi connection. I confess that I find this utterly baffling: when you specifically design a Wifi adapter, and you produce your own driver, specifically for W10, how come it works far worse that the tiny device in a phone? There's no excuse for this. *** original review *** This worked OK to begin with. I've had it for about 40 days now and it no longer works properly, although there is a rock-solid Net connection and Wifi system (as regularly attested by my phone tests, for example). Although this is now (just) outside the "return window", I would consider challenging this on the basis that the kit is simply defective. But instead of getting rid of it I intend to a get a better, more expensive piece of kit with a couple of aerials sticking out of it, and keep this as a reserve thing (it is only £7). This is absolutely typical of Amazon: very cheap and very rubbish, the absolutely classic flaw being a fault that only comes to light after a certain time. For this reason I hardly ever buy anything from Amazon any more. I wonder whether Bezos is clever enough to understand that this business model is not sustainable and that tens of millions have now reached the same conclusion as myself.

This mini WiFi adapter is a convenient way to add wireless connectivity to a desktop PC or replace a faulty internal card. The small size is useful, as it doesn't take up much space and can be left plugged in without getting in the way. It works well for general browsing and everyday tasks, but the performance is fairly average. The connection speed and range are not as strong as some larger adapters with external antennas, especially if the router is further away. Overall, it is a simple and affordable solution that gets the job done for basic WiFi needs. I really loved the USB. It didn't work on my Windows 7 PC. But it did work with my Windows 11 one. It was the best service. Thank you so much for the service

I bought a 2nd hand desktop PC but discovered it had no internal wifi. I bought the TP Link TL-WN823N 300Mbps Mini Wireless N USB Adapter and connected it to my Desktop PC. I installed the drivers with the C.D included. Setup was easy and it worked first time. I am using my smartphone as a wifi hotspot to this wifi adapter and it works perfectly. The internet speed is fast and i can watch Youtube videos with no issues. Highly recommend this wifi adapter if your PC does not have wifi or your wifi card is not working.

This little wireless dongle is performing flawlessly, attached to a 2009 Mac Mini running El Capitan. The mini was built from collected parts but without the WiFi antennae. Those antennae sell, on the used market, for about twice the price of this TP-LINK device and don't provide better performance. Both the TP-LINK and the factory WiFi are "N" spec. so they should give similar throughput. I purchased this model (TP-LINK TL-WN823N) because I needed an adapter for a dead-cheap computer build. This target machine contains most of an actual Apple 2009 model, its not a hackintosh, although I can't imagine why it wouldn't work nicely in the latter. The price/performance was perfect for what I needed. The TP-LINK adapter uses a software utility/driver to function under MacOS. The software is included in the package on an optical disk. There is also some software for Windows and Linux but I can't comment on that because I didn't try any of it. The size of the device makes insertion and removal from a USB port easy, even if the ports around it are occupied, but it's small enough not to stick out and get brushed/broken. Once this device and its app are installed it just does what it is supposed to do. In fact, I tend to forget it is there. To my mind, that is exactly the way a WiFi adapter should work. The app puts an icon on the bar at the top of the screen, much like MacOS does. Through that icon, you can control the TP-LINK device independent of the other Mac network facilities. The idea that it uses a proprietary app to handle it, rather than trying to integrate with MacOS, can be seen in a positive light because it means that TP-LINK has control of both the hardware and the software. That makes it independent of any changes the OS manufacturer might make in the future. I have several TP-LINK devices and their product support is pretty good. In fact, the products are good enough that I've never had to contact TP-LINK other than to look for updates or get product information/specs from their site. As a last thought, Amazon offers a range of these WiFi devices. Some of the higher performance models could be used to improve on the built in hardware in older machines. So, if you have the support for AC/Dual Band from your router or access point, you could buy a pretty significant WiFi boost with one of the more powerful TP-LINK products in the list. The increments in performance are less than ten dollars in price. If your machine has an on-board "G" spec. WiFi adapter then one of these units will give you a very satisfying speed boost for very little money. Keep in mind, if you plan to use one of these adapters on the road (laptop), most public WiFi hot-spots don't offer more than "N" spec. service. I consider the TP-LINK TL-WN823N a good purchase, and I would do it again.

This works for a system that uses Peppermint OS 3 very well. I plugged it in and it ran. No need to install the drivers from the CD that came with this adapter. It gets a strong signal. It doesn't even get warm like my older adapters. It does not disconnect while using the Peppermint OS 3 system. I tried to load the drivers and wireless manager from the CD and it just kept freezing on the XP system so I just installed the drivers. Although, XP had drivers for a 300Mbps wireless adapter already to be used when I plugged this in. So maybe you don't need them with XP. I have been using it for a week. I have 2. One for my laptop and one for my Desktop and both run well on Peppermint OS 3. My Desktop is a dual boot Linux Peppermint and XP. Now I can use both and have faster downloads and uploads. I purchased this because I had a wireless adapter that kept getting disconnected when using the Peppermint OS 3 operating system. The XP system on the same machine used the adapter just fine but the Linux side didn't. I read that some adapters just didn't stay connected if using a Linux system and to try a kind that did. I saw a list of adapters that were reportedly operating well with Linux and one of them was the TP-Link brand. I had a 54 megabyte adapter before and thought I would try something with more capacity. Yes, it says 300 megabytes per second. I am not sure if it reaches that speed as the router that I have only goes to 150Mbps. (yeah, only, that is fast for my casual emails and YouTube, I am not a gamer.) I am in another room from the router and I am getting 144.5mbps and 3 out of 4 bars for connection. It works better than my old adapter and it works on my Linux system. I am using Peppermint 3 and a 2005 desktop computer with XP pro. I also use it on a 2003 Laptop running Peppermint 3 and it works great. I had to put a usb card into the side of the old Dell Inspiron 4150 to get USB2. Now I can use Linux with a fast USB wireless adapter. Nice! I recommend this adapter. The price is good and it is half the size of my old adapter. I am not as nervous like I was with my old adapter sticking out so far. This one is much shorter. And it works better. 5 stars for Linux users and Dual booters like me!
