Review: Lonely Planet seems to have grown up, at last. - Had stopped using Lonely Planet years ago when they descended into being guides only about where to drink. But, took a chance and tried again, and was very pleasantly surprised. Some good tips in this book, including all the obvious places and a decent selection of non-obvious ones too.

A useful guidebook about Japan
I don't like Lonely planet guides but this one is nice. I used it a lot during my 2 weeks in Japan.I like that it's colourful and easy to find stuff.

Excellent guide
Brilliant for areas around Nikko-city, both for site seeing and food. Due to work constraints I had no time to visit elsewhere

Everything I expected.
The guide is really good, just as I expected. I'm still in the preparation phase for our trip, so on our return, I'll post an update of this review. I usually prefer paper editions, but in this particular case I'm almost regretting my choice, because the book weighs over 1 lb. That's a lost of ballast to be carrying around.

Excellent book, gorgeous cover
Fairly good condition, and considering it’s “used” the only part about it that has any evidence of use is the top left corner, otherwise I don’t think it was ever read. Excellent price for the book. I know the edition is out of date, but I’m sure it will serve me just fine.

If you have to choose one guide, this is the one for Japan.
My favorite Japan travel guide of the 3 guide books I bought. The lonely planet one is the best. I could probably just have gotten this guide. It's is incredibly large and covers A LOT, but it doesn't go into much depth as the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide and it doesn't has as many photos. I'm OK with that since I plan to be seeing the places I want to go to and don't need many photos. If you don't plan to see all of Japan I would recommend getting a smaller city or area guide because this guide can be a bit overwhelming because of it's size and breath of topics. Overall a great guide and probably the one to get if you only buy one guide. First Choice: Lonely Planet Japan Tied for Second Choice: DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Japan or Japan by Rail If you like a very photo rich guide that goes more into the culture and history of Japan then DK Eyewitness Travel Japan may be better for you. If you will be focused on rail travel and staying in rail serviced cities, Japan by Rail is very good. No other guide covers the rail system better and how to use it than Japan by Rail.
