When you hook the black clip onto a bolt or other metal part of the frame, it REALLY has to be clean and totally free of rust to make a connection. I thought the thing didn't work at first. Eventually I gave up and just connected the black clip to the black battery terminal (BEFORE plugging the unit in) and then it was fine. I had this thing outside exposed to below zero temperatures for 3 days and it seemed to work fine still. One thing to note is if you plan on connecting two batteries at once that are still in the cars, you have to park them REALLY close to each other because the cords aren't long enough. I got this to keep my batteries charged during an arctic freeze and had to park the cars facing each other, bumper to bumper, to get the cords to reach both batteries. I think they sell extensions though.

I use these to keep a trickle charge on my classics. Lights indicate they are installed correctly and if battery is charging.

Purchased this to charge our two RV house batteries during the off season. Fit and finish was very good and the unit works exactly as described, kept batteries topped off with no noticeable overcharging. Instructions are a little TOO detailed and can get confusing but - the unit is pretty intuitive. I would purchase this again.
