The next door I used a finishing hammer to just push the dowel until it went flush to just below the surface of the door and that worked perfectly. It also didnt hurt my thumb. I am not sure if necessary but I used the screws from my previous doors rather than the ones that came with the kit. The ones from my previous doors are a little longer and do not taper like a wood screw. The fit is secure so I have no reason to try the included screws.
