Q: how do you turn it off?

You only need to turn the switch anticlockwise to the end to close it

Q: why are there so many wicks?

I tried on two separate occasions to get this heater and it wasn’t delivered to me either time. Wicks have to be replaced every so often so having many wicks is a good thing.

Q: Where do you purchase kerosene from? I never had a kerosene heater.

Several local gas stations have kerosene at the pump available. Wal Mart and tractor supply sell special, low odor kerosene, but it's considerably more expensive. Usually, the kerosene pump at gas stations is separate from other pumps.
