Beautiful books, excellently written
These books give the mythological background to Tolkien's writings, and focused commentary on the tales Tolkien told, his characters, the places they lived, and their world. It's presented in beautiful volumes that are a joy to hold. With many illustrations brightening the pages of the text. The writing strikes a good balance between depth and brevity. It informs without being overwhelming. Recountings of legends is done in a way that gives their tales justice without taking away the desire to read orreread the original. If you have any interest in Tolkien's writings, I highly recommend adding this set to your library!

Great Content, Easy Read
While this is compiled information from the books (and perhaps nothing new to the experienced scholar) this is the perfect setup for a beginner Tolkien fan. Everything is labelled out from legends to species and it’s easy to skim something during breaks with only have five minutes to read. There is a significant amount of artwork in each book. The faux leather binding is indented and frankly awesome. My one pet peeve is the sticker on the back of each book saying they’re not official — very hard to scrape off without damaging the cover.

Beautifull to see, hold and read!
As an Tolkien fan I just love admiring his work through opinions / works of art of others. This set fully lives up to this. I really like the feel and handling of the soft back cover and the picture across the spline of the 7 volumes when standing together in the correct sequence. I was worried about it getting damaged on the way from the USA to Europe but not necessary, it arrived undameged. Also I was notified about all the different stages of the journey.

If your new to Tolkien this set is good to get an idea of Middle-Earth.
As I am new to J.R.R. Tolkien,I have found these books to be a great source of information. Love the dictionary, atlas and hobbit books the best, though all are good.Greatly enjoying the name studies in the books. Learned things about characters I did not know. Gandalf is not human? Wow. Lots more, but too much for a review.

Okay but not great
Beautifully done and clearly a labour of love. But it didn't ADD anything to my knowledge or give me a great reason to make me feel like this was a wise investment.
