Beautiful, but lacking one thing...
So, this was not an inexpensive cookbook. The book is FULL of so many authentic French recipes, concise and easy to follow. There is no getting lost in long wordy recipes here. The author explains many “how-to” steps in different sections of the book (which is wonderfully hefty). The only thing I wish there were more of would be pictures...I like to see what my final dish should look like (perhaps a personal preference that would have made this book entirely too heavy and perhaps they chose to offer the more important actual recipes instead). This would make an amazing wedding gift, as the author originally intended it to go to new brides!

The book gives basics for French, as well as other European types of cooking. There is a general assumption that the reader knows her/his way around the kitchen. Some basic cooking techniques are assumed.

Broken Spine
The recipes are great. My issue with the book is the binding, which isn't strong enough to handle 975 pages. The spine cracked after a few days, and I give it only a few days more before the pages start to fall out. Phaidon editions are usually better than this.

The real French cooking
Love this book...read it for ideas, to compare other recipes. These are SO French, the real thing, traditional. Simple, fast, easy to read.

Amazing book
Absolutely huge book. Full of recipes. More than you would ever need. Not the book for you if you like photos with every recipe though.

I love it. I use it almost every week.
It does have a lot of recipes, and it covers a very wide range of french home cooking (not really haute-cuisine, BUT you will look as a 5-star chef if you can pull off a good number of the recipes listed here).It can help you both for a fancy dinner on the holidays, or for more casual feasting with friends (it is in the latter where I think the book excels the most). Even for a beginner as me, most recipes are very doable (and delicious!)

Great book. Chinese print quality was not as good as original.
