In direct consequence of larger events portrayed Romanized Latinized Frenchmen as such (still carrying same old consanguinary independent streak) had yet to entirely emerge, Gallic (Gaelic) people of these times & places justly represented just like Braveheart as Scots & Irish folk, well here & so they were, with distinguishing Tartans & your St Patrick’s Serpent horns & Gallic Sword as their Smith still trying to come near & decorative Celtic knotwork on his kid’s bed & a Whisgebarra shebeen cooking by a pile of grain sacks & what further authentications & quaint artifacts of life in the times as who should know but so far somebody did.Roman kit visibly authentic down to last laces & out to every class of support weapon in their artillery train [incredible all what people on this production had the dedication to craft up just to be seen going by] with proper string guides laying out road projects & cows dragging logs & every real guys doing every real work raising & digging to improve every real working modular defenses, then every arrow sticking in every groaning/patient stiffs, every splash of gore that is there & every gum wrapper that wasn’t, every sigil on banner & brooch on cloak & fruit on table & chicken at large reflecting the personal consideration of someone there to look after those, as if who ever heard of such a thing as real work or would know about ever did any.More or less relevant cryptic pronouncements given to Max von Sydow’s delivery fair as any to screen the incalculables liberating men of action to get on with your stunt, while thinking it over what we might find to offer any bloody more useful in their situations; Christopher Lambert levelly returning “Why not a King chosen by Destiny?” with Destiny summoned into anybody’s centuries by one man who came in from asking ‘Why not’. Lotta woman Sword Sister Rhia keeping warm in her generosities “Go to her---there will not be many more nights”, (impressing as the next country’s Sam Wanamaker) as Celtill behind B-P Donnadieu as Dumnorix (“Half the booty—that’s not enough for you?” “It’s too much.”) just go look. To be entirely historically just Caesar & rest of the Romans should be represented by a powerful Italian [like Giancarlo Giannini as Shaddam IV in SciFi’s DUNE] only to make this available to the expectations of a modern audience of our era the enemy of anybody’s France could only be a German guy, here Klaus Maria Brandauer delivering a charmingly urbane thinking man’s Caesar open to all approaches to gaining his way shun no danger shirk no labor & spare no blood if it had to be his or everybody else’s—Presently handing (as it were) his missions to the other man (received real through every gear in the box) to return & render unto Caesar how his latest charm offensive may be reaching a certain natural limit.Principals carried on their shields all through by a revolving door of quality featured players expressing the popular spirit (the furniture people even having to hold themselves in to avoid stealing any scenes from 1sts & 2nds where this wasn’t intended) animating fore middle & background spare a glance to any figure among that lot digging their pits in the back all showing better interest in our work, & go tell people all about Theatre & Cinema. [Or go & engage the London Philharmonic in 60 BC] Music is good & right on the context fair to let you know when spirits are in better places, or events on ground about to take a serious left turn.[Then knowing how there’s such a thing as Caesar’s Gallic History he was left to have written while still getting away with it] we could only build up so much ultimate suspense here, “I don’t want a battle, even if we win, Rome won’t rest &c” having this inflicted on him by the ungovernable enthusiasms of his insubordinates & seeing it all brought to worse just like he said it would, all right there you have me, whatever came out of our last Destiny Cookie trying too hard to leave your near & dear with something to carry on upon actually lames across as real as any This Wangs Chung to cover the occasions, anyone's real last testament was going out under the sky being who we were just because it’s what they can’t take, & hope to see it out to the last triple Lindy off the end of my plank.[Funny thing about 'laughable'] then if that’s all these could do for you, maybe it wasn’t their limits.

This movie gets 2 stars, which is truly a gift, simply because it at least brought attention to an historical figure who really deserved not to be lost in obscurity.I tried, really tried, to find something to recommend this movie, as I had much higher expectations, having read Morgan Llewellyn's book "Druids", and found it wholly entertaining. I did not see any credits acknowledging Ms. Llewellyn, so I can only assume they either loosely used her book for the script, or she shuddered in disbelief at the final cinematic product and wanted no association with it at all!I tried to be open-minded about what was presented here, recognizing it as a work of fiction, but the historical innacuracies were too ridiculous and defeated the purpose of the movie. To start with, Vercingetorix is historically represented as a large, muscular man, a fearsome warrior, and also was an attractive man with a commanding presence, good leadership capabilities, and a brash, impetous personality. I was repulsed by the selection of Christopher Lambert as the actor portraying him. (They should have selected the actor who plays the other "Highlander" lead role, it would have been much more believable, Scottish accent and all, though Vergingetorix was Gaulish, of course.) For pity's sake, Vercingetorix was a WARRIOR, a hero, someone who put fear into the hearts of his enemies!!!! Lambert makes him look like a pathetic weakling, speaking with a lisp, and coming across like an effeminate boy-girl!! And having some REALLY bad-hair days!! We're expected to believe that THIS is the leader who inspired the Gaulish tribes to finally unite, to follow him, rising up against Caesar???? The aged Druid, played by Max von Sydow, towers over him, making his appearance even more small, timid and unreal.Vercingetorix was known for his raging temper, and he had the physique to back it up. Lambert's depiction of the emotion of anger or rage is so ineffectual, so ludicrous, that Boy George is more frightening. It's as out-of-context as Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood" speaking in "Olde English", with a Southwestern American twang in his voice. Then we have von Sydow and the actor playing Caesar, I forget his name, both having German accents in their speech.Then there is no identification of who is who, and what role they play, to help us understand what is going on and why. For instance, if you know something of Celtic mythology, there is in Irish myths a warrior-woman, named Skye, the island is named after her (Sky-uh), who is a master in the use of all weapons, and trains the mythological hero-warriors, like Cuchulain, and I suppose this is what is being alluded to, with the female warrior training Vercingetorix. But without that mythological insight, that scene makes no sense, and how many people seeing this movie would be up on Celtic mythology. Judging from the reviews, very few, if any. Too much about the movie was just unrealistic, not in the least believable, and this film has some of the most stilted dialogue and worst acting I have ever seen. Lambert is just awful in this film, truly awful. There isn't even one scene that redeems his role here. He is not the least bit convincing as a warrior, leader, or lover. How the hell he wins not only one, but two women is beyond me.This film might have been salvaged, if a more believable lead actor had been chosen. A story about a hero needs a strong actor in that role, someone who can anchor the story-line and lift the rest of the cast into working with him. Lambert is just not the man for this film. He is not just bad, he is awful, he is ridiculous. His acting is so poor it makes the whole film flop. It might have survived the German-accented Druid and Caesar, and the manufactured battle scenes, but with the zero-appeal of the lead actor, the movie was doomed.And it seems like overkill to mention the music was horrible as well, but, well, that just added to the disjointed nature of the venue. Skip this movie, please, as enduring it will be painful.

I ordered this because I'm into things Celtic and Christopher Lambert. I didn't realize that Vercingetorix is just the French version of Druids. The history wasn't too off the mark but the acting and actor's attire was kinda hokey. The biggest disappointment was no English subtitles and my French is a bit rusty. So I just bought Druids and watched them back to back. It's a shame that this was obviously such a low budget film, because Vercingetorix had a powerful influence on the future of the Celts. Maybe a remake could be done...

It seems that historically based movies suffer from the critics as much as horror features do. While this is not an outstanding piece of cinema, it succeeds in showing the last days of the Roman campaign against gaulic celts. Acting is not very good (Christopher Lambert never been a good actor), but I liked the scenary and the movie pace. At the end, an entertaining movie where you learn some about the history of Roman conquest in western Europe. Lastly, a descent movie for the price.

These sorts of films look to be of a lower budget yet it is the spirit of such films which brings enjoyment. A fun, entertaining, not to expect too much, let the imagination have fun playing make believe to fill in the blanks. The sets are pretty enough, the costumes are fun, the supporting casts of such lower budget films often carry the loads for the scenes which is a treat in and of itself.Have watched twice would listen to in the background again while enjoying a fine book!

The script was pathetic, the dialogue stilted, the acting abominable, this was overall an exercise in amazement that I paid cash to see it and hung in there to let it run to the end.I was disappointed, and a bit ashamed as a Canadian for the part that Canada had in the making of it.I wanted so much more, but would have settled for mediocre.

Povero Lambert, dopo Highlander non è più riuscito a far niente di gradevole...... Il film nella fattispecie, come tutti nel suo genere, avrebbe una bella storia come spunto, ma sviluppata in modo terribilmente "economico"...... Le armature dei romani sembrano quelle che potresti comprare oggi in un qualsiasi negozio di Roma per turisti, anzi sono anche peggio......Hanno risparmiato persino sulle comparse; all'inizio è impressionante come l'arrivo in Gallia delle legioni di Giulio Cesare, sia ridotto all'arrivo di poche unità, neanche lo sforzo di creare un effetto speciale per simulare l'arrivo di decine di migliaia di legionari...............CHE SCHIFO!!!
