To read and follow. Great for beginners!!! Especially at my age!!! Lol

This book uses a color coded not system for beginner violinists. Each note is in color and depicted on the staff and in a "violin tab" form that is like guitar tabs with the addition of color. There are some fun songs included like Scarborough Fair and other classic songs. I note that there are no songs by popular bands but, still, the selection is pretty good.

I must be honest and state that I have a degree in music education. OK. No big deal. But why would I order a basic book teaching violin, especially since one of my two major instruments was violin? Simple. I wanted to see what modern music training literature is like. I did not specify that I finished my degree in 1969. Yes, kids, I am THAT old!! But, seriously, that is why I ordered this book. Frankly, I was not disappointed. This book is, decidedly, EXTREMELY basic. But it starts its journey by providing background information on music, generally. How to read, etc. And it does so well.I can tell you that, when the student completes this book, he or she will NOT be a concert violinist. But she or he WILL be ahead of someone who has never taken a violin lesson.So, if you are looking for something that will, basically, get you STARTED and ready to continue onto more complex learning, you can't go wrong with this book.And did I mention that this is not just for kids? Well, it is not just for kids. It is for anyone who knows little about the performing side of music and wants a gentle takeoff. This book will do that for you.Whether you will be able to play when other people can hear you and not have them running for earplugs will be up to you. No self-taught book on playing an instrument can guarantee that. But, if you apply the lessons in this book, and if you actually LISTEN to your playing, I think you might just find your family or friends will not go running when you play.You might even get some applause, and let me tell you, that feels GOOD!!!

Some would say this is fine for adult beginners, but I would say this is for children. It's music for very young children. I expected some of that, but this said "beginner" and suitable for all ages, so I incorrectly assumed it would have more age-appropriate music for adults who want to learn violin. I won't be using this and will look for a book that specifies it's for adult beginners that includes modern music instead of nursery rhymes.
