I had an LP with this same title many years ago and somehow it got lost thru the years.This last meeting of Django and Grappelli in the studio showed how they both had evolved as players over time and being apart for a long time.As is usual,Django overshadows everybody else who's playing by his forceful rhythym playing and genius level lead lines.For anyone who may not know,Django had only the functional use of his first two fingers on his left(fretting) hand due to an accidental injury to his hand when he was in his teens.He made up for this handicap with absolutely brilliant playing with the digits he had left.I recognised some licks that he had played on some of the songs recorded many years earlier,but you can hear some bebopish note choices that he used very tastefully on this record. As for Grappelli,his tone and pleasing lead lines is very enjoyable to listen to-as always.For this record,he and Django can still play the unison parts much like I imagine that they had worked out a decade or more earlier.There's never a mistake that this is Django's record,but Steph seems to have a bigger part of this group than the old Hot Club days.I saw Steph in Dallas live one time,and it was one of the highlights of my life. Just a few words on the bass,drums and piano player on this session.In some places I've seen where these guys were described as weak players barely able to keep up.I disagree...these guys were in the presence of greatness and were most likely totally intimidated by Django and Steph.I think they did a more than good job as accommpaniment for Django and Steph. Anyhow, my two cents and I highly recommend this CD.Thanks.

For me, the Greatest Jazz Guitarist, ever. Yes, I am a lover and student of various Jazz Eras. Django Began in the mid 30's and Passed away in the early 50's. Very little filmed performance, but this stunningly fast, great improvisational playing set the Jazz world afire. All this, with only the use of 2 fingers on his fret hand. He had been in a horrible fire, which fused his ring and pinkie finger together, so he was left with his index and middle finger to play riffs and songs that still baffle the tops in Jazz guitar....How with only 2 fingers, playing better than anyone had heard was possible, added more to his legend. People can replicate his songs now (with all their fingers), but they can never write a song like "Nuages", and they don't have the deft touch on standards like "Sweet Georgia Brown", and "I'll See You in my Dreams" like Django. This collection has every tune to get a person started down the road to learning about one of the true greats, or to replace lost wax. It comes with a CD of the same music, and a selection of postcards with Django, and full band Portraits. Also, it is pressed with a lot of dead wax in the centre, avoiding inner groove distortion, how could you ask for more? Tres' Bien!!!

A great addition to my jazz collection & it will enter into heavy rotation. The record came with a CD but I wish it also had the autorip feature. Overall, I would say that you will get your money's worth out of this album.

This is one of the most beautiful recordings. I heard "Beyond the Sea" on Sirius radio and fell in love with it. Ordered the cd as soon as I got home and I've been playing it ever since. Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli are so superb in their own rights, but together they create magic.

This box set has 10 FULL CDs of the greatest Jazz guitarist of the 20th Century, Django Reinhardt. Yes, it duplicates a lot of material on the two JSP Django box sets, but it has a number of cuts not found there on those releases, and I personally found it worth the investment. No, there aren't any liner notes. No booklet. No description of the other musicians, or when or where these tracks were recorded. It's enough to drive an obsessive Virgo like me crazy! But if it inspires me to research and track and research Django's recorded output month by month and year by year, my life will have been that much richer for it. The sound is sometimes uneven, but that's small consideration all other things taken into account-- TEN discs of Django Reinhardt for UNDER TWENTY DOLLARS!!! What a deal!!!

The Music is reproduced very well. Nice disc Transfer. The only thing missing are the musicians credits.

Ever since I got sucked into vinyl, I've been wanting a little Django Reinhardt to bring along with me. This collection is okay. The quality of the materials & printing is pretty lackluster. The record sounds fine, but the choices aren't necessarily the ones that I would have made. The version of Nuages, for example, is the one with Stephane Grappeli and not the classic one with the clarinet. Maybe I'm alone in being bothered by this, but it just doesn't work as well. But, for the most part, it does the trick. I just wish that there had been some better choices on the market for Reinhardt. It feels like a gap. The sound quality is okay, but nothing to write home about.

A collection of some of the "must-have" recordings in the world of jazz. Superb playing from everyone, with jaw-dropping work from the two leaders, guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grapelli/Grappelly (it is spelled both ways on the packaging). As far as GREAT recordings are concerned, these are among the most fun. The interplay and invention are exciting and the effect on listeners is palpable, producing joy and probably even some dancing. Highly recommended.

Vermutlich wird sich für diese 10-CD Sammlung wohl kaum der Django-Einsteiger, sondern eher der forgeschrittene Hörer interessieren. Das spannende an dieser Sammlung: Nicht nur die sattsam bekannten Best-ofs - es gibt vielmehr auch seltenere Aufnahmen von Django mit Bigband, bzw. seinen späten Flirts mit dem Bebop. Wer schon einige Django-Sammlungen im Schrank hat, ist hier gut bedient. Meinem Vorrezensenten kann ich mich nicht anschließen, denn der Meister ist weniger wegen seiner "knallharten" Spielweise, sondern vor allem für seine Klangdifferenzierung berühmt. Kurz: Wer diese Musik schätzt und sich nicht primär an der technischen Wiedergabe berauschen mag (der Sound ist insgesamt ok), bekommt hier für überschaubares Geld auf 10 CDs viel geboten. Minuspunkt (sonst wären es 5 Sterne): man bekommt die blanke Musik, ohne Text und Zusatzinformationen. Vorbildlich ist hier die Rétrospective Django Reinhardt 1934-53.

I bought this to play in my hire car as I drove the Californian Pacific Highway, staying at lovely old inns along the Californian coast and reading John Steinbeck late into the night. This haunting music of the era conjured up images of California's past, when desperate Okies tamped the roads looking for work in the golden state. Now, when I play it on rainy English days I am transported back there again, to fields with millions of nodding artichoke heads, and to elegant resorts like La Jolla, where seals sunbathe on the beaches and pelicans swoop over the bays.

La migliore edizione per qualsiasi amante e non del gipsy jazz. Contiene praticamente i migliori pezzi e non del repertorio di django. Alcuni pezzi non nella loro versione più famosa ad esempio Minor swing, ma in un certo senso meglio così. Lo sporco di questo vinile da un colore al suono magnifico, il vintage si fa sentire tutto.

You can't go wrong with this. 10 CDS of pure django?! wow. This is constantly in my cd player.
