Why wait for reservations? Get your kid to cook?
I didn't mean it Alice! Actually, yes I did! What I meant to say was I didn't mean it 'meanly'. Because like Thomas Aquinas and the Church, you know that if you get 'em while they're young, you got 'em for life! Good choices, good habits, good food ~ it just keeps on givin'.I just bought this book twice in a week. The first was as a baby shower gift ~ the fifth such since it was published in '92 ~ and the second time for myself, realizing that while I had looked through, skimmed and admired it I had never owned or cooked from it.Several years ago I remember running into the women I had given the first copy to as a Christmas present, her daughter was Fannies age at the time. She told me daughter had completely taken over the kitchen, relegating her husband and herself and the siblings to shopping prep and cleanup. Her brother refers to her as "Mothra" Stewart. All the kids not only eat but relish broccoli and Brussels sprouts and never balk at cleanup! I asked if she wanted help getting her "real" family back? Laughingly she screamed, "No!"Outta' the skillets of babes! Go figure! [ASIN:0060928689 Fanny at Chez Panisse: A Child's Restaurant Adventures with 46 Recipes]]

Wonderful recipe book for parents who would like their children to cook and eat ACTUAL food
This is a wonderful, accessible cookbook that is a delight to read as well as cook from. This is the case for myself and for my daughter. It introduces whole foods, recipes that are fresh from the garden, recipes that are delightful to look at, smell, consider, and taste. This is a wonderful contrast to most of the cooking for/with kids cookbooks out there. There is no open-this-can, open-that-can mix-it-together-and-call-it-food. There's no horrifyingly sugar-laden, preservative-laden, artifically-colored, -textured, -flavored anything. There's no start-with-something-healthy-and-then-tart-it-up-because-we-don't-think-kids-will-eat-food-unless-it-is-formed-like-a-smiley-face.This book assumes your child (and you) is not an idiot. It doesn't talk down, it doesn't try to sneak healthy food under their radar, it doesn't assume that they are screen-addled dolts with no awareness or affinity for the world around them. This book knows that kids are interesting and interested creatures who notice and are fascinated by the world around them, and how things work. This book lets them know how food work, how it gets to the table, and how wonderful it is to enjoy when it gets there.So. If that describes your son or daughter, this (or Marion Cunningham's book) is the one for you.

What a wonderful and wholesome intro to the romance of cooking
I have had this book for ages and purchased one for my granddaughter when she was 7 because she appeared to emerge from the womb with an intense attraction to every aspect of kitchen goings-on.This book has been beautifully made with great care.

Nice book, interesting style
I bought this book to read with my 5 year old and it may be a bit long and wordy to keep the attention of that young of a child. However, he did enjoy it at first, we just haven't kept reading it. But I like the book very well, it is well written and a fun narrative style that seems engaging for children. Seems like it would be a fun teaser for a child who is beginning to express an interest in cooking. It has the story of Fanny and her mother's restaurant at the beginning and then recipes in the back. We haven't made any of the recipes yet, but they look fun and simple enough for kids.

A charming, not-entirely-children's book
Famed chef Alice Waters wrote this about her daughter Fanny, as a way to introduce children to the joys of fresh food, cooking and dining. having just read now-adult Fanny Singer's memoir, I wanted to compare her memories of growing up at Chez Panisse and Cafe Fanny to this book.

Fabulous Book, Great Recipes & Stories
I love Alice Waters, her slow food philosophy, and use her cookbooks constantly. My daughter has the hard-bound copy I purchased years ago and has loved this book since she was very young. I bought this one to have a copy for myself. If you love slow food and want to read great stories about Alice Waters and her daughter and her experiences growing up in the restaurant business I highly recommend this book.

Perhaps too soon for 10 year old budding chef.
Gift for budding chef but not the hit I thought it would be. She isnโt yet to the point of โreadingโ cookbooks the way some others pour through magazines.

Beautiful.
I purchased this to give as a birthday present for my friend's 9 year old daughter, and having a flick through it upon delivery, I know she's going to love it!Although I was prepared for it to be both recipes and story, I wasn't expecting the book to be the size it was. The illustrations are absolutely stunning and the range of recipes, I think, are perfect for any budding foodie to get stuck into (and the whole family to enjoy). I can't comment on the story, but I shall definitely be reordering one for myself (I'm pushing 44!).If illustration, food writing, whimsy or cooking are your "thing" - buy this book. You won't be disappointed!
