It's a smooth plastic, I don't see much use for it but my daughter is fascinated. It does what it says in the publication.

This is perfect for practicing dance at home. For me it is for practicing ballet barre and pointe shoe work, it ensures you’re not slipping while also providing glide for the movements through your foot.It is big enough for some floor work as well, and I can see how it would be easy to purchase multiple and fix them together for a full floor practice.Easy to re roll and put back in the tube for storage!

Firm and non slippery
I love this floor. I bought two and placed them together with another one I already had. Perfect for my home studio. I practice pointe work without being afraid of slipping.
