This review is for the new Micca Speck 4k-Ultra
I've been streaming HEVC video over WiFi from a shared network PC drive to a Fire Stick 4k Max using VLC Media Player app. Using 5GHz WiFi band, my WiFi is fast with good streams on all services. The Fire Stick often stutters or stops on any files over 1 GB streaming from the a shared network drive on my PC. Research shows the new Fire Stick lacks the processing power needed for decoding larger HEVC files. This little Micca device is golden. It plays even the largest HEVC and all formats I've tried with never a hang up, no buffering, or stutter. It plays them all perfectly with great HD quality. It won't stream from my network drive of course, so you have to write the files to a USB drive and plug the drive into the Micca. I use the Buffalo 2TB SSD-PUT, formatted NTFS. The Micca has a small remote about the size on the Fire Stick remote. Better is that all remote buttons are for the Micca player only, so you can't accidently press one that sends you into limbo like what happens on the Fire Stick remote while trying to pause a video. So aggravating... The only aggravating bug the Micca has is sometimes when trying to click/rewind a scene back 10 secs. That only works intermittently. The Firestick using the VLC app does not have this problem. The Firestick remote also controls TV on/off and volume, the Micca does not. After getting very used to both methods of playing/streaming downloaded files of various formats and sizes, I've switched to only using the Micca as the better choice because of its smooth flawless playback on anything and everything. You can work around the few bugs it has, whereas you cannot work around the Fire Stick 4k Max not being robust enough to play the larger size files, and/or unknown WiFi glitches. The Micca Speck 4k-Ultra also has the added bonus of letting you delete a file that you have watched. That saves you from having to take the flash drive to a PC to delete a watched file. When ordering the Micca Speck 4k-Ultra, keep in mind that it does not come with an HDMI cable. If you have an extra, you're fine. I had to borrow one from something else and then ordered the Amazon 8k deluxe cable. You will need two AAA batteries for the remote. Also, after getting used to the Fire Stick remote which is mostly Bluetooth, I didn't like having to point the Micca remote directly at the little box. Even when pointing it in the general direction, buttons didn't seem to work on first press. The solution to this, is a much more sensitive remote I/R sensor that plugs into the Micca box and has a 10 foot cable allowing you to place it anywhere. It is ten times more sensitive now, and you don't have to point the Micca remote because the sensor will pick up signals reflected from surrounding areas. I've changed this review several times, only because I want people to know I've tried many methods and devices for playing and streaming downloaded video files of various sizes and formats, and the new Micca Speck 4k-Ultra is the best method so far. Great player for looping content
If you need a reliable, high bitrate 4K media player that will handle both HEVC and H.264 encoded content, this is the unit. A key feature of this unit is that it will seamlessly loop video files. Meaning it will replay a single video or series of videos without a titles or playback controls popping up when content cycles. It's a small but important detail. User interface is clear and utilitarian. Autoplay function works reliably at power on/startup.

Excellent playback, simple video viewer
I bought this player to play my own underwater videos shot in 4K on a projector for video presentations. I plug in a 4TB USB hard drive, connect via HDMI to the projector, and playback is great: true colors, no stutters, a remote control that lets me adjust volume and start and stop for questions, and (unlike plugging in a laptop) there are no competing processes to interrupt playback. It also looks great plugged into a 4K OLED monitor, and I love its small size. I use the player to play back subtitled movies in .mkv files as well, and again -- playback is excellent, and the player presents available subtitles and/or audio tracks as desired. It's very good at playing back foreign movies. That said, the resident video player is a bit simpler than I would like, which keeps this from being a five-star product. Its principal drawback is that it provides only two aspect ratio settings: original and stretched. That's fine for videos that are originally in 16:9 or 4:3 ratio, or for 16:9 movies compressed to 4:3, but there are lots of other videos out there that need different correction. Earlier European TV shows such as BBC series, for example, shot in PAL/SECAM, appear squished in original, and really stretched out in stretched mode. Most video players offer a variety of aspect ratio settings to address this. This player doesn't. The player lets you fast forward and rewind through a movie, but provides no view of what you're scanning through such as a set of thumbnails that show what's under the playback cursor. This makes it hard to locate a specific location in a long video. When you look for a file to play, if the drive contains many hundreds of files (as my drives do), the player scrolls through one at a time with no option to speed up or page through much faster. If you want a file starting with "Z" it's going to take you a while to get there. I don't use the player for audio, but thought I'd give it a try on a USB drive containing thousands of albums that I have ripped from my CD collection. It took forever for the player to index the drive so I could see the contents, and after that it was very difficult to scroll through for the audio files I wanted. Playback was fine, though, so if you're playing back from a source with just a few audio files I assume the player would be fine. Don't expect to set up playlists, though, or find other more advanced features. The remote control is simple and well laid out, and connects well to the player. All in all, I can heartily recommend this player for straightforward quality playback of 4K, 1080p, and SD videos in a lot of different file formats. The size and price are great. Just don't expect to use it for more advanced video playback. P.S. I hope one of these days there will be a firmware upgrade that puts in place more advanced player software.

okay at first, then found lots of files it won't play
Was quite happy with it at first, but then started noticing more and more files it would not play. First were .AVI files, they start out fine but the audio goes farther and farther out of sync as they play. Contacted customer support, they asked for more details right away, then replied back that they use the xvid/divx type codec, which they claimed used a propietary license. I researched that, got back to them with proof that was false. Next day they sent another reply that just quoted a ffmpeg library manual that mentioned that some players dont support that codec since it is complex. After that I got no more replies to my requests. Since then, have found more files that don't lay right, especially ones with higher bitrates. Very dissapointed, replacing this box with something else! All these files play fine on other brand players, pc, tablet. One other item is the odd way the FF/Rewind work - one press moves it 10 seconds, holding down makes it jump forward or back really fast, very hard to find a spot in the video or just move a little bit back.

Great Media Viewer and Excellent Customer Support!
This is a good and reliable Media Player, one you can count on. I've tested several, this is the best I've found at the sub-$100 price range. The User Interface is simple and sharp. I'm currently using this with a 4TB External Hard Drive & the Media Player is quick, fast, ZIPPY. With a 4TB Drive, it takes only 30 seconds or so to pull up all video files on your screen. The Remote is better than what you usually find on budget media players, bigger than I expected and it works well! Support and Customer Help from this seller is outstanding. I had a small problem with my device & order but rather than to go through Amazon I first contacted the product maker's support team. They responded right away and Solved my problem VERY quickly! So here's the bottom line: Good product, Fair Price and Excellent Support from this company. Recommend you buy this, it's win / win / win all around. ...

Not without issue
Works, but not without flaw. Often requires a reset or the USB to be removed and reinserted to work. Lately the problems have been getting worse and more frequently. It freezes constantly, needs a magical combination of hard restart, soft restart, and removal/reinsertion of USB drive to work and then freezes or shuts down randomly. This is from about a year of ownership and not used for 6 months of that year. That being said, I am buying it again hoping for a better run. It does exactly what I need it to when it is working.

Good player for the price
I like the fact the player is small and can be mounted with double sided tape to easily conceal it. It's easy to use and has ports for a micro sd card and usb. I tried it with a 4tb hard drive and it worked easily. I did notice it does take a little long to load up once its on, it take a bit to scroll through files and can freeze for a second as you try to go onto a different file and the remote, at least for me, has to be close for the player to respond. I tried new batteries and it still had to be semi close to work. I noticed the player will only play what is in a folder. So if you have your seasons separated by folders you will have to scroll back, click the next season folder and start playing the next season. Best advice is create a new folder with all your seasons sepearated and titled in order correctly to binge watch anything you may have. Other than that, it plays flawlessly, plays every file with no issue or freezing, has options to shuffle play and repeat or straight play and stop. Very simple to use and auto detects files.

Speelt alles

Zufrieden
Macht bisher was es soll.
