I think that because the bag is not full in the images, it appears larger. Laid flat, the bag is approximately 18" x 15" x 0.3". But when filled, the bag is approximately 15" x 12" x 4". So if you are carrying something like a very thin laptop, it could be 17" or 18" wide. But if you were carrying multiple laptops that were 4" thick, they could only be about 15" wide.
