Brilliant read
Exceptionally well-researched biography, giving a great insight into the life of one of the most talented British riders of all time and, at the same time, providing a detailed chronicle of speedway in the 1950's. Overall an absorbing read for anyone interested in the history of speedway racing and its relative popularity in the immediate post-war era. It's a pity there isn't a bit more about Brian Crutcher's life after retiring from the sport, but that doesn't detract from the quality of this excellent book.

Exciting read
This book was hard to put down and chronicles the speedway career of Brian Crutcher very well. It could have been just a list of events, it was a list of events but they were woven together with style and real feeling. I had to duck the flying cinders in some chapters. I must point out a personal interest as my father was racing at the same time although he did not crop up in the book. I got to like this man even though I have never met him such was the description and tale telling by Tom Wareham.I would have liked to have read a little more about the rest of Mr Crutcher's career at the end of the book however. That said I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story.
