My Experience with the TG862G/CT from Amazon and used with Comcast
First let me say that this unit will not ship with the battery although the web-site will say battery included under product details unless by now Amazon has changed the website. The good news is that when I called Amazon to report this they were kind enough to ship me the battery at no cost and that is one of the reasons I am a loyal Amazon customer. Good customer service. Now for the Infinity TG862G-CT here is what I know:1. This is the only 'retail' residential gateway you can purchase IF you have telephone and internet from Comcast. I verified this through both Comcast and Arris. Basically you are going to pay for the Wi-Fi and 4 port router whether you use it or not. In my case I use a separate NETGEAR Nighthawk Wireless 4 port router which has proven to be an excellent performer.2. Your individual experience with Comcast on this is highly dependent on the agent you get. My experience was both good and bad and very time consuming. You might as well hook up the unit which is the easy part of the entire experience since it takes you maybe one minute to put your connections in. At this point you will have neither phone nor internet and you will be calling Comcast hopefully on your cell phone. They will need some serial numbers from you and then they will 'provision' the device. I had tried to call before I disconnected my old one but it seems Comcast wants to make it as difficult as possible. Having a cell phone to call Comcast is key.3. Arris will tell you that when you speak to Comcast and it is time to configure how you want the residential gateway regarding the Wi-Fi portion you are going to need to ask Comcast to speak to a Level 2 or Level 3 Technician. In my case I did not want the Wi-Fi on at all and simply wanted the unit to function as a 'bridge' to my NETGEAR Nighthawk. Sure enough until I could get a regular agent to transfer me to a Level 2 Technician it was like communicating with an alien. Once I was connected to a Level 2 Technician everything went along much better as we were speaking the same language and he knew exactly what was required. It turns out that only Comcast on their end can make this unit function as a 'bridge' unit. You will not be working with software on your end trying to make this happen so actually that is a good thing. It probably took 30 minutes for the Technician to call me back on my Comcast landline phone once he had taken all the information down. So then my phones were working and the light on the unit said the unit was online so I hung up and went to my wireless devices and my hardwired desktop only to find that none of them were working. So I called the Arris technical hotline because you get through to that immediately and that technician was very helpful and after some complicated troubleshooting he determined that although my phone functioned normally my internet had not been properly 'provisioned'. So back to Comcast and this time just a regular agent was able to 'provision' it properly and bingo we had internet.4. If you do use the unit as a 'bridge' unit for internet (and I assume most people will because there is no way this will be much of a wireless unit unless you are standing next to it) then Arris recommends that you use ONLY one of the four ports on the back of the unit.So in the end I replaced my leased, older, simple unit which did everything fine but cost $10 per month which in my case meant I had paid Comcast $600 for the previous five years. You are not allowed by Comcast to purchase a 'retail' unit that is simple and would provide phone and internet. 2 minutes to install it physically and way over an hour on the phone with Comcast and Arris to get it to function properly. There was a certain satisfaction with walking into the Comcast Service Center and getting my receipt for their simple unit and ending my $10 per month charge. Does it make sense to purchase this for $200? Flip a coin. It will take me 20 months to break even assuming I stay with Comcast. The unit I turned in was certainly very profitable for Comcast.Five stars to Amazon for their customer service. Four stars for this unit for two reasons: 1. You are forced to take a Wi-Fi capable unit even if you don't want one and 2. $200 is a high price.

Limited speeds of 100/150 MBps and does not save money vs. renting from Comcast!
Would give a zero if I could.Jackie below had the same issue.I was getting voice mails to upgrade my Xfinity modem, that I thought were solicitors. I wanted to check with Comcast to report them. I learned that the calls were from Comcast and I should upgrade my modem. But I cannot upgrade my modem UNLESS I GO BACK TO COMCAST AND RENT. I bought this modem from their recommended modem list to take advantage of the Extreme Speeds in our Triple Play package. The product description above says "Capable of internet download speeds up to 320 Mbps and upload speeds up to 120 Mbps based on your Comcast provided service." After talking to Comcast twice today, this modem does not exceed 100/150 MBps!!! Arris does not have download support for this modem and Comcast says the updated firmware can only be obtained by getting a new modem. Such a scam, but typical of Comcast.

Works just fine
Not sure why folks leave such negative reviews on this. I ordered this unit to avoid spending $10 per month in a rental. Once plugged in to the cable connection and plugged into my PC, I logged into Xfinity's portal and activated it. The device rebooted several times and then I was ready to run.I have my own firewall and wireless setup at my home so I simply called Comcast tech support and asked them to put the device into bridge mode. It took all of eight minutes. This had the side-benefit of disabling the xfinity-wifi that folks complain about. No need to build a faraday cage as others have mentioned. Even if you don't want the device in bridge mode, you can still get rid of the free wifi by calling Comcast.Note that this unit did not come with a backup battery. I read that before I purchased it. You can buy one here: Arris ARCT00830 10/12 Hour Battery For ARRIS Touchstone TG8/TM5/TM6/TM7/TM8 Modems While I'd love to retain full control and not have to call Comcast for everything, that's not the fault of the product that I purchased. That is the service that I'm subscribed to. Arris ARCT00830 10/12 Hour Battery For ARRIS Touchstone TG8/TM5/TM6/TM7/TM8 Modems

Save yourself some $$ but be sure to read the entire review
I just got everything connected! I spent about a half hour on the phone with Comcast support and was able to get the gateway setup with minimal issues. I was renting the exact same thing for $10 a month. People might worry about limited support if they are not renting, but Comcast is not going to leave you hanging unless the unit is completely dead. And to that note, I am an IT guy. I can tell you that you are rarely going to have a hardware issue with something like this. There are no moving parts, so save yourself some money if you have the triple play package. It will pay for itself in less than 2 years. Now to address some of those reviews about a poor wireless signal. They are correct! My wireless gateway is in my basement, so I have connected my old router upstairs to extend the wireless range in my house. Before triple play, I had a separate modem with a Netgear router. It had a much stronger signal than the Arris modem has. This isn't all bad, and here's why. If you haven't figured it out yet, Comcast uses a portion of this router to broadcast their "xfinitywifi" hotspot for anyone to use if they are a current Comcast customer. Even though it is completely segregated from my internal network, I don't want every bozo in my neighborhood sucking up my bandwidth. It sort of reminds me of buying a car. The dealers plaster their names all over the back of the car without asking. I didn't get a good enough deal from any dealer to give them free advertisement, and I am not getting that great of a deal from Comcast to offer up a free hotspot. As a matter of fact, if it was in a spot for everyone in the neighborhood to use, I would build a faraday cage around it (Look that one up!!).I am giving this gateway 4 stars for one main reason. Comcast has locked out the settings for the external DNS servers. They want you to use theirs (of course). Not a big deal to most people but prior to triple play, I was using OpenDNS for filtering out some of the garbage the internet has to "offer." There is a parental control option that you can turn on in the gateway, but it is terrible! Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Comcast support told me there is no way to change it.Anyway, I am looking forward to dropping my bill another $10 a month. I hope this review helps and don't be scared to drop the rental fee!!

it got worse and worse and I finally replaced it at 14 ...
Flaky WiFi needing weekly reboots at about 6 months, it got worse and worse and I finally replaced it at 14 months , Amazon listed warranty as 2 years in May of 2016 (when I bought it) and I read the fine print and it say 12 months. I would have sent it back well before 12 months had I known that! $215 dollar waste of money (I spent hours getting it registered with the blockheads at Comcast, then hours and a trip to Comcast to return the rental, then 14 month later go back and get another. Outrageous and very much annoying waste of time and money. I notice the NEW version ARRIS Surfboard Docsis 24X8 Cable Modem / Telephone / AC1750 Router Certified for XFINITY - Download Speed: 1 Gbps (SVG2482AC) says both the new version and old version which I bought in May 2016 has a 2 year warranty, really Amazon? Can I send it to you guys at amazon? BTW Comcast unit not a single hiccup since July... Terrible do not buy ARRIS Surfboard Docsis 24X8 Cable Modem / Telephone / AC1750 Router Certified for XFINITY - Download Speed: 1 Gbps (SVG2482AC)
