Does the writing on the keys wear off with time?

I labeled a key for a door at work many months ago. I use the key daily and the lock is very hard to turn so I have to squeeze the key (and label) very hard. This key has become slightly faded but still very readable. I figure it will be another year before I have to rewrite the name on it. All the other keys that I use less look great. They even get wet.
