Coven is well written...
...and action filled. I love the art work, also. I'm looking forward to reading the other books.

witchy
I have loved Jennifer Dugan's books since I discovered Verona Comics during the Covid lock down. I devoured all of her books as soon as I could. I was so used to her being a novel writer that I was a little worried about a graphic novel, but I had nothing to worry about! I enjoyed this book just as much. I thought the illustrations were great and so was the story. The characters were very loveable. I would definitely recommend this to the Jennifer Dugan fans out there as well as to graphic novel fans and fans of witches.content warning: death of parents, animal death

Witchy Good Illustrations
I was captivated by the beautifully done illustrations. I was able to fly through the pages and just wanted to find out what was going on to cause Emsy and her parents to move! This coven of elemental witches was full of surprises and I loved the addition of the spiritual/death witch aspect. I am always so here for the love is love! We have a couple of queer characters and I enjoyed those small romantic moments.I did find that the story went so quick and then the ending happened so fast that we missed some context for a fully flushed out story. There was a lot of fluff incorporated that I don't hate in a graphic novel, but then I expect more from the action and arc of the story. I needed more character development.I would be interested if there is a sequel to see where the story goes with certain characters like the villain! And again I cannot get over the beautiful, stunning art!

Perfect for Spooky Season!
The witchy wonderful world of Coven was a delight! Forced to move from the home she has always known to help save her coven, Emsy is distraught trading the only life she's known for a witchy powers and a small town.I really enjoyed the writing. The art was very pretty as well. There were a few loose ends that I'm wondering about, but overall, it was an insanely excellent story. The character, Emsy, is realistic. The LQBTQ+ representation was on point. The storyline had a lot of plot twists, some of which I wasn't expecting. I did find myself wishing for more of a resolve between Emsy and her girlfriend and other friend towards the end. I also feel like the ending resolved itself a little too quickly; however, it was still a pretty satisfying ending.Overall, this was a great spooky read for the fall/Halloween season and it has a good diverse cast. Bewitchingly Good
Coven is a graphic novel about a teenage witch (Emsy) and her family move from California to rural New York to rejoin their coven after a brutal attack on their family of witches. I loved this premise and the artwork! I'm glad this story was told in this format because it works really well. Emsy, our main character, emotes so well over the illustrations. You can read her so well and she shines on the page. I enjoyed flipping through this vigorously and then flipping back a few pages to look at it all over again!Besides the format, the plot holds pretty well. Emsy is a likable character and you can feel her frustrations with her situation and consequently the frustrations other characters have with her too. We get a good sense of who the characters are, what their magical abilities can do and how they work. Ben was a sad character to work with but he had some moments and ultimately it's him trying to get his family back, in a unfit way. Overall the story felt very Sabrina in high school, only Sabrina was a surfer girl before the witch part. I also appreciate the diversity and LBGT representation in this novel with multiple characters. My only critique was that it was quite a bit of build up for a quick ending with a somewhat obvious villain. And for as much time as we spent building up this story it still felt like we were missing something vital to the story. I wish we could have had a flashback sequence to really get a sense of the tragedy or even a picture of Ben's family so we could put faces to these people that were senselessly destroyed. It was a quick read, but it's perfect for the spooky season and I would recommend it!

Great story and superb art
Sixteen year old Emsy is living happily in California alongside her friends and girlfriend when an “incident” in New York throws her world upside down. Her childhood friend Ben has just lost his parents in an unnatural act of magic and Emsy’s parents decide they must return to their home state to be with the coven that they left years ago. While Emsy is angry to have been uprooted, she is soon practicing her magic as a fire elemental and finds herself deeply embedded in the mystery of what happened to Ben’s parents. Together with her new friends, Emsy embarks on a mission to protect the coven and hopefully, get her life back. While I am not normally drawn to either graphic novels or YA, a first look at this book had me drawn in. The illustrations are fantastic, with just the right amount of action on each page to keep it from being too busy and confusing. The story is engaging from the start with many unique characters. It features beautiful colors and a plotline that kept me guessing until the end.
