A Must-Have for Instructional Designers
I've been a trainer for many years now, but my job duties have shifted over time so that I now work extensively in instructional design. This book was an amazing starting point and does a fantastic job of giving you the highlights and big-picture considerations when designing and delivering a course. A must-have!

Obvious insights poorly presented
I'm considering changing careers into L&D (I have some previous teaching experience), and decided to read this book to get some insight into the field and see what kinds of skills I should be developing. However, I found the book to be a disorganized and poorly presented collection of basic ideas that were mostly obvious even to this outsider to the field--learning requires practice, not just instruction; in-person and web-based training have different strengths; etc.. For such a short book (small pages, many of them with very little text), it's quite repetitive. I also found that some of the examples had no clear point (or even went contrary to the preceding claims), and overall the presentation of the book was a poor example of what the book espouses. (As a minor example, I'll note that shortly after a page warning against creating new acronyms for trainees to remember, the turns a phrase into an acronym for no clear reason.) On the whole, I can see some value for someone with no prior experience in L&D or pedagogy, but I can't imagine how this book would be useful to someone who actually works in this field.
