Held about 8 - 81/2 inches from the object and with my eyes a foot away from the glass from it works very well for me. Not nearly as useful for close work as there's not much magnification close in.Nice heavy glass lens, which to my surprise & delight does not distort when I rotate it... bravo! Good angle viewing too, two people could look at the same object at the same time with this, great for educational use, or looking at (for example) a caterpillar with your child.The handle is a bit too thin but seems strong enough for household or office use, I'd want something sturdier for field or industrial applications.Because it's fairly heavy it tends to twist if not gripped a bit tighter than should be necessary. This is due to the hard plastic handle being mounted toward the end rather than in the center, and to the above mentioned thin profile. For most people this won't be a problem, you'll quickly adapt to the initially awkward feel, but I can't recommend it for elderly folks, young children, or those with disabilities which affect grasping.A solid pick at this price point, useful for most home, office or educational applications.

Could be better glass, and the area of actual magnification is very small. I wasn't expecting that since this is not a precision instrument.

In my opinion this magnifier is worthless for reading a book or looking at a map. To get the 2.5x magnification you must hold the magnifier 15 inches away from the page plus back your head up another 15 inches from the magnifier. That's not useful for reading. If you hold it at a comfortable few inches above the text there is very little magnification, about 1.25x. For magnifying a computer screen where 6 inches screen to magnifier and 10 inches magnifier to eyes is reasonable, it works quite well with about 1.5x magnification. I measured the focal length to be 14" using a bare bulb 12 feet away. A lens with a focal length of about 5-6 inches is better for reading. Otherwise the quality is very good for the price. Just be sure it will meet your needs with these specifications.

Works great - just what I needed.

This is a good magnifier, and comes with a storage case. I bought it mainly for the adult dot to dot books I do to relax. This magnifier is not that heavy, that you can't hold while searching for numbers. Great purchase.

Does nothing to magnify an image.

When you're knocking on a bit you need a bit of help even wearing glasses, this helps with the really tiny writing some companies put on instructions to annoy us. This does the job and has a cleaning cloth and a bag to put it in.

Ordered this for my mother who has problems with her eye sight. She uses it for reading. Excellent value and she is happy with it.
