Tomahawk Scout Field Craft Manual: Survival Skills of the Apache Scouts

Excellent Survival Guide - Highly Recommended
"Tomahawk scout Field Manual: Survival skills of the Apache Scouts" is a solid wilderness survival guide for novice through advanced skill levels. This was written by well known wilderness instructor Thomas Moore (AKA "Thomahawk) who was featured on the TV series "Dude You're Screwed". To be clear, this is not a reproduction of an authentic Apache Scout Field Manual (which I doubt ever existed, in print at least), but rather survival skills that are derived from methods those skilled scouts used and augmented with modern gear and the author's vast experience in the field. The book starts with a brief history of the Apache Scouts and then dives right into covering survival skills that reflect the author's time tested strategy of traveling light and making the most of what nature provides. The chapters include sections on Shelters, Water, Fire, Food, Snares and Traps, Tracking, General Survival Skills, Knives and Axes, Gear, and Recommended Reading. There is also a Test section to evaluate your understanding of survival knowledge.Scattered throughout the book are a lot photos of the author in various remote locations, numerous drawings and illustrations, and a good amount of his personal experiences using the skills being highlighted. Some of the diagrams are a little hard to read, but the useful information is usually contained in the text.I like that books is fairly small and can be added to my camping pack without significantly increasing the load.Highly Recommended!CFH

Good content. The history is there
Good content. The history is there, but I wish there was more details of the Apache scouts. Otherwise it's a survival book...Wish I could get a USS pin. That's kinda cool.

Very original and practical.
Very well done. I love the history portion of this book. Learning about the Apache Scouts was a big plus that this book offers. The author is the real deal. He is a no nonsense sort of guy that fills this book with the things that he used and is still currently using to this day, living and working in the wilderness. Whether you are planning to spend time in the eastern woodlands, the western deserts, mountains, or even exotic jungles across the globe. This book should be with you, in your pack, and at the very least, burned into your brain by reading it cover to cover multiple times. This book is not a copy and paste of any other "survival book" on the market. Very original and practical.

Buy cheap get cheap
The book is littered with typos and bad grammar. The photos are grainy, poorly drawn and then scanned or not helpful all together. The only relevance to the Apache scouts in the introduction, after that he talks more about his experience. Even then he spends more time talking about how his way of doing things is better than everyone else instead of how to actually do it. For instance he reiterates that he bought a cheap knife 30 years ago a dozen different times and it works just as well as other knives. I honestly find something I like in every survival/bushcraft book I buy, but this one is just rough. There may be a gem or two hidden in the text, but I can't find it.

Straight to the point, very little fluff.
This is a compilation of skills, methods, and practical use all combined into one book. He gets straight to the point, has good instructions and illustrations. It’s a valuable resource that never claimed to be a history book.
