Check your rice / slow cooker before purchasing
The mf'g/seller should be very clear on what "rice/slow cookers" this works with before purchases are made. This gets 3 stars because I believe in truth in advertising. It does not work with the vast majority of those appliances out there. They have to be analog. I don't have a digital slow cooker but it does have separate buttons for high-low-warm. It is not analog. To test your device before you make the mistake of purchasing this, plug it in / turn it on / pull the plug / plug it back in. If it comes on when you plug it back in and resumes heating then it is analog. If you have to rechoose a setting or turn it back on, it is not. I had ordered this device outside of Amazon and the seller, unknown to me, had cancelled my order. When I discovered that, I ordered a different sous vide device on Amazon Chefman Sous Vide Precision Cooker w/ Digital Display & Accurate Temperature / Time Control, Thermal Immersion Circulator and used it for a month when this device showed up at my door. I went ahead and tried it out and discovered the problem with my low tech slow cooker. It might work with my rice cooker from the 80s I gave my son but will have to get it back to test. Supposedly the other seller outside of Amazon sells a $20 rice cooker to go with it that works. I like the concept, it fits in a drawer better but I don't want to buy a special appliance for it. The whole point was to make use of an existing one.Update: I managed to purchase a Hitachi analog rice cooker from 1993 at a silent auction for $10. It works like a charm with the thing. It's not super accurate keeping a steady temperature like the Chefman one because it utilizes turning your rice cooker on and off. So I just set the temperature a degree or two higher than the recipe calls for so that the lowest it will drop is what the recipe calls for. I can store the unit inside the rice cooker which is really nice. I won't be able to cook 4 lb roast or anything because it's only a 10 cup rice cooker but for 1-2 serving sizes it works. Still leaving it at 3 stars because they aren't communicating real clear with the consumer on what you can use with it.
