Brilliant and witty
I loved this book. It is an witty observational romp of Victorian manners and romance in our world but with flying houses. Enjoy its unusual tug and twist at the hem of normality. I listened to audiobook version, which has fantastic narratation and really emphasises the wit and brings out the character voices. I am a massive audiobook fan so I bought the ebook when on sale, then the discounted audiobook (which amazon offers with participating ebooks) and can switch between listening and reading. For me, this is absolutely a fabulous book to listen to. Will defo be listening to the next books in the series.

Unusual story with lots of plot twists
A society of female pirates who fly about in houses? Yes, that's how weird this story is, but it is full of hilarious characters and situations as well as the romance between innocent Cecilia and the rogue Ned.Excellent lively narration throughout makes it a thoroughly enjoyable book

Bizarre but fun
Cecilia Bassingthwaite is a genteel Victorian lady; she is also a pirate and awaits the day she will become a member of the infamous Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels. When the Society is endangered by the deadly Morvath, it falls to Cecilia to rescue the ladies who are so dear to her. Unfortunately, that means teaming up with Ned Lightbourne, a handsome scoundrel, with more aliases than can be recounted. Naturally Cecilia does not at all trust him, however, that doesn't stop her heart from fluttering whenever he is near! This was a light and amusing read from India Holton, if rather absurd, but that was part of the enjoyment, I think.I loved the Wisteria Society itself, and the notion of these lady pirates, prim and proper, yet deadly with their flying houses. The story was imaginative and fun, with a spirit of adventure and lots of double-crossing, and certainly didn't take itself too seriously. The villain is pure caricature but fits the tone of the story.Of course, there is also a dash of romance thrown in with Cecilia and Ned. Their exchanges are filled with witty repartee, and it has to be said the dialogue throughout is sharp and filled with lots of literary references and dry wit.Needless to say, it's very madcap, with plenty of action and humour. I will say that because of the tone of the story it does all feel very superficial and given it is all rather one-note I did find myself skim reading parts of the book as it went on and think it may have benefited from being a little shorter to sustain attention.Overall, an interesting read in that it felt unique if bizarre, however, I'm not if I will continue with the series, as I tend to prefer books where I can feel more of a connection with the characters.

super funny book
honestly a great read!! i love books with witty banter and this book is full of it. i will say that due to the book being based in a different era it can be slightly difficult to understand the references and terminology used but otherwise it was truly an amazing read! there was also a great spicy scene which was an amazing bonus! overall a great book highly recommend!

Well it's different!
I admit I wasn't into this book at all to start off - seemed very silly. Not sure where it changed but all of a sudden it was 'just one more chapter and then...'It's very, very different. Amusing rather than funny and 100% over the top but quite an entertaining way to spend a couple of afternoons. You won't believe it when you read it & you will notice some errors, but you'll certainly remember it.

Perfect for fans of long satire
Probably just not the book for me. I read that I would love it if I loved The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches but I have no idea why, they’re very different. It reminds me a lot of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest kind of satire

3 stars
This book had a really unusual plot and ideas. I really liked how the houses were used in lieu of actual pirate ships. However at points it was a little ridiculous and just felt too long.
