Q: How thick is this fabric?

Not thick at all. It's very pliable & flexible. Depending on the color, if you stretch it, you may be able to see through it. Hope this helps.

Q: is this durable enough for carpeting in a briefcase and is it water resistant?

I don't think it is water resistant.

Q: Does this material have a back that can be glued onto styrofoam for lining a musical instrument case?

I think the glue may seep through. Maybe use something in between the case and the fabric. That may work.

Q: Does light come through this easily? I'm looking at this for a photography background.

If draped properly, light may not come through it. I held a piece up toward my window, and I can see defused light through it. Hope this helps.
