Pretty in Pink

This review pertains to the Paramount Presents blu-ray edition
"Pretty in Pink" (1986) was directed by Howard Deutch from a screenplay by John Hughes who also was an executive producer. It was a modest theatrical hit grossing 40.4 million against a budget of 9 million. The cast is tremendous featuring Molly Ringwald, James Spader, Jon Cryer, Annie Potts, Andrew McCarthy and Harry Dean Stantob. While not quite as critically acclaimed as "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club", it is still a terrific little film detailing high school life in the mid 80's from the inimitable screenwriting perspective of the late & great John Hughes."Pretty in Pink" got a DVD release all the way back in 2006. It seemed like the film would never make the jump to blu-ray but Paramount finally did just that in 2020 as part of their new Paramount Presents line of special edition blu-rays.The film got a new 4K remaster and is presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio (slightly opened up from its 1.85:1 theatrical exhibition) utilizing the AVC codec at a beefy bit rate staying usually in the mid 30's. Simply put, "Pretty in Pink" looks amazing! Detail, color saturation, and contrast/black levels are all near perfect. Unless the film ever got a 4K UHD physical release, this is the best the film will ever look. This new transfer was supervised and approved by the director. The feature itself gets a robust 5.1 DTS-HD mix. There is also the option of an isolated score track which is cool since the film is highly celebrated for its soundtrack. There are also options for German, French, and Japanese audio tracks in regular 2 channel stereo. English subtitles are included for the hearing impaired. The disc comes in a cool slipcover that opens up on the front to feature the original theatrical poster art.Extras while sadly on the light side are as follows:- Filmmaker Focus: Director Howart Deutch on Pretty in Pink (7 min. 38 sec.)- The Lost Dance: The Original Ending (12 min. 15 sec.)- Original theatrical trailer (1 min. 27 sec.)While I am disappointed that there is no director and/or cast commentary track or new cast interviews, this long overdue blu-ray release of "Pretty in Pink" is still a must buy for fans. The film looks and sounds amazing and when it comes down to it, the presentation of the film is of utmost importance. In that regard, Paramount knocked it out of the park with this one.

Misleading! False Advertising
Having owned this on VHS and DVD there was really not much of a reason for me to upgrade again. Although, I will add that the upgrade looks beautiful, but should have been presented on 4K instead of Blu Ray. My compliant and the reason for the one star is the misleading information about the original ending. They NEVER show the ORIGINAL ENDING! It's not included on this set. There's a featurette of them talking about the original scene which included shots of them filming the original ending, but the ACTUAL ending is not featured here. Extremely disappointing since I saw "The Lost Dance: The Original Ending" on television many years ago and had the same complaint then. Paramount, release the footage or don’t, but don’t trick me into thinking I’m getting something I’m not. Maybe Criterion will get ahold of this and do it justice. I will not be supporting anymore Paramount Presents Blu Rays from this moment on.

Does NOT have original ending!! Misleading!
The case and disc are lovely, but the listing for this Blu-ray is very misleading!! It does NOT have the original ending, it is just a featurette of the cast and director talking about it, which was created years ago. I bought this Blu-ray specifically to have the original ending to the film! If you are someone who is looking to purchase this for that reason alone, like me, don’t buy it!

It looks good but not great! Why not 4K with a blu-ray...geez.
First let me say that thank God I bought a digital copy of Pretty In Pink on amazon over a year ago because this version of Pretty In Pink the first release of a blu-ray does not come with a digital copy. You would think it would for 19.99 and today I just noticed it went up to 26 dollars and change. Outrageous like Lionel Richie says on the American Music Awards (Google it!) Lol. So that being said it looks just a slight better than the amazon digital copy. I noticed that about a lot of disc movies whether it be blu-ray or 4K blu-ray. I bought it for nostalgic reasons. I grew up in the 80's and hey what bad thing can you say about the 80's but only that I was a Mexican nerd who loved the 80's and Madonna of course. Anywho I suggest maybe waiting for price to go down unless your really really really nostalgic or just buy the Amazon digital copy it looks almost just as good.

~ PRETTY IN PINK finally receives a nice Blu-ray transfer and better packaging, artwork ~
Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, and Andrew McCarthy star in an '80s classic now remastered from a 4K film transfer supervised by director Howard Deutch. Produced and Written by John Hughes (SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB, WEIRD SCIENCE), the movie is about Andie, a High School girl from the other side of town.Finding love is going to be tough this time around when a wealthy classman asks her to the prom, but trouble ensues in the relationship. Harry Dean Stanton and Annie Potts add their talents to the movie with a hit new wave soundtrack.Sound and picture quality are really good here and I was not disappointed.** NEW feature: FILMMAKER FOCUS: Director Howard Deutch on PRETTY IN PINK.** NEW Isolated score** Original Features: Original Theatrical Trailer, THE LOST DANCE: The Original EndingRecommended for John Hughes '80s fans and fans of Molly Ringwald.

You know you love it!!!
If you were a teenager in the 80s, you have to love this movie! You may not understand why, but you know you do! It’s even cheesier as the years go by, but it’s a great memory. As an Andie look-a-like in high school, I have fond memories of popping this VHS tape in at slumber parties!

Always thought Spader stole the show as lazily evil, languid, lizard-like Steff
While this famous John Hughes teen drama sees the love triangle of Andie, Ducky and Blane, personally I feel it's done much better in its genre flip successor Some Kind of Wonderful. Always thought Spader stole the show as lazily evil, languid, lizard-like Steff, Blane's 'friend'. Picture quality very good on the BD, pretty short on extras but you get to see the three protagonists discuss the Duckie ending from 2006, and a recent revisit from the directory in 2019/20. (j4.)
