Rouge (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Anita Mui at her best
This movie is so good, I first bought the DVD on Amazon when it was produced by Media Asia more than 20 years ago. I watched it so many times I was so glad when Criterion added it to their collection. Of course the picture quality and translation are so much better than the HK version. Anita Mui is perfect in this role, and give a compelling performance as spirit searching of her lost love. Its a pity the Queen of Canto pop had to leave this life so early

Supernatural love story
An unsubtle ghost story, Rouge is foremost an unique love story. As if filmed by Wong Kar Wai.

Hypnotic, Anita Mui's best
I was thrilled to learn that Rouge had been added to the Criterion Collection. The company has slowly but surely been introducing more Hong Kong cinema into their lineup in the last year, and this is a truly deserving selection. Emblematic of the cinema, Rouge is a genre-bending story of complex characters and complex emotions, and it stars the late Anita Mui at her very best. This release itself is a single disc Blu-ray, in Criterion's standard plastic case. The insert is on the small side (a fold-out), but has a fine essay and some beautiful artwork of Ania Mui in character. The film itself seems almost-miraculously restored; it looks brand new (I'm not especially knowledgeable about film restoration, but am a big fan of Chinese films of the era, and know this kind of high-quality transfer is hard to come by). The original mono audio is included, though there is apparently an alternate surround soundtrack as well. Special features are modest, but the notable documentary Yang ± Yin is one such inclusion.Rouge is a very welcome addition to my collection, and I'd recommend it to all fans of Hong Kong cinema.

Classic movie! A must see
One of my favorite movies with Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. Boy meets girl. Boy looses girl. Girl tries to find boy. It's tragic but there are some comedy in it. It's definitely a must see. It is has English sub titles and is in Cantonese.
