Iron Man in transition with new creative teams behind the comic
Essential Iron Man 3 covers some major changes in the comic. Writer Archie Goodwin and George Tuska were the original creative team and did issues #12-23 in this collection. Tuska was one of Marvel’s great artists. His drawings had sharp lines and strong characteristics. Goodwin started spreading out with his stories during this period. In issues #17-18 Tony Starks’ Life Model Decoy grows an ego of its own and decides to get rid of Starks and become Iron Man. In #25 he wrote about environmental pollution as the Sub-Mariner attacks a Stark business for degrading the ocean. In #27 he introduced Firebrand who used to protest for Civil Rights and against the Vietnam War, but got so tired of the system, he wanted to start a revolt. Some classic Iron Man foes were also introduced like the Controller in #12 and Midas in #17.Starting at #26 Don Heck who’d worked on the Avengers became the artist. His style was good, but not up to the standards of Tuska. Then in #29 Goodwin left to be replaced by Allyn Brodsky and then Gerry Conway. The stories were a bit up and down during this period. One of the standouts however was #32 which was borrowed from the movies when an alien comes to Earth to evaluate it and becomes enamored by human emotions. Then in #33 a multi-issue story began with the Zodiac hiring the Spymaster to try to destroy Stark Industries. That brings in Nick Fury, Madam Masque and Daredevil.Overall, this is a very good series of Iron Man comics with a few lows. The start is the best with the Goodwin-Tuska team at the helm.

"Essential" MUST for Silver Age Iron Man Fans
As a kid in the 1960's-70's, I was a fan of Iron Man comic books. The "Essential" series give fans a chance to re-live those classic stories without the expense of having to buy the original issues. This volume comprises Iron Man issues #12-38 and Daredevil #73. It also features the pairing of two of Marvel Comics brightest contributors - writer Archie Goodwin and artist George Tuska, from issues #12-24. I consider Tuska to be the finest artist to ever draw Iron Man (and I spent many hours as a kid trying to re-create his great drawings). Goodwin wrote stories with depth and emotion. His series from issues #17-22 which deals with Tony Stark's desire to lead a "normal" life and it's tragic consequences are my all-time favorite Iron Man issues. Bottom line - if you are a Silver Age Iron Man fan then these books are for you. I would give it 5 stars except for that they are reprinted in black and white - but it does not detract from the excellent artwork by George Tuska.

What a bang for the buck and a great way to catch up on some old story lines
What a bang for the buck and a great way to catch up on some old story lines. I heard they issued these in black and white because it was a cheaper way to get these comics out to the fans. I appreciated that call. I enjoy the stories very much and the essentials give you that reward. I have several of them. In fact with the Fantastic for you are able to read comics that are really hard to find in color.

Great book
This book covers an interesting time in Iron Man stories of the early 70's, with Midas, Shield, the Avengers, Daredevil, and the always interesting Madame Masque. If you can't get the full color back issues, reading these stories in black and white is the next best thing.

An Essential Look at Shellhead
Straddling the Silver and Bronze ages for comics, the nearly 600 pages cover 1969-1971 through The Invincible Iron Man #12-#38 and Daredevil #73.Appearances by the Avengers, Daredevil and S.H.I.E.L.D. only enhances the story lines where Tony (Iron Man) Stark faces off against a number of recurring evil doers. This is a very impressive volume of intelligence and technology from the "Armored Avenger."

Iron Man enters the 1970's
A very solid collection of tales that encompass triumph and tragedy. This volume was brought out in time to ride the wake of the recent movie but the tales gathered here are from the very early years 1969-1971.Starting with a 2 issue story introducing the superb looking Controller closely followed by the Night Phantom and a tag team of two old Marvel favourites The Unicorn and the Red Ghost. Other old Marvel foes like The Titanium Man, Lucifer, the Collector and Zodiac are mixed in with a new Crimson Dynamo, Midas, Firebrand, Spy-Master and a group of alien planet-formers led by the Foreman.Guest appearances from the Sub-Mariner, Daredevil, Nick Fury and the Avengers. The back stories are very important in the early days, there is a tragic love interest with Janice Cord, Madame Masque (Whitney Frost) plays a major role as does Jasper Sitwell (Tony Stark's SHIELD bodyguard) and Eddie March and Kevin O'Brian appear as do, briefly, Happy Hogan and Pepper Potts. This volume is laced with stories involving ecology, racism and global industrial espionage. Tony Stark also has to undergo surgery. The artwork is great, mainly by George Tuska and Don Heck with a few assists and the bulk of the story writing by Archie Goodwin, Allyn Brodsky and Gerry Conway. Being in black & white does detract slightly but at this price you can not argue with the value for money and it brought back many memories.

Classic run comes to an end
After halfway George Tuska is replaced by Don Heck, and then Archie Goodwin goes as well. The rest is filler.

Buena compra.
Una de las etapas clásicas de Iron Man. Poco y mal publicadas en España. Esperemos que se resuelva pronto. Saludos.
