Product Description Jack DeJohnette - Drums, Herbie Hancock - Keyboards, Dave Holland - Bass, Pat Metheney - Guitars. For the first time, these four masterful musicians come together to form a jazz group most people would never expect to see happen. Taking their collaborations around the world, they toured Canada, Europe, Japan, and the United States, performing concerts and festivals to sold out audiences and rave reviews. On June 23, 1990, this extraordinary group performed two concerts at the Mellon Jazz Festival at the Philadelphia Academy of music. Both shows were filmed and have been carefully edited to create a technically flawless video of a truly "once in a lifetime" event. All of the songs were selected with great care, as might be expected from a band of this caliber. Including "Shadow Dance", a Dave Holland original; "Solar", a popular Miles Davis original; "Blue" is an original piece by Jack DeJohnette, and "Cantaloupe Island", the closing number of the program, is a Herbie Hancock original from the 60's. Formatted for DVD 16 x 9. .com DeJohnette, Hancock, Holland, Metheny in Concert is a feature-length (98 minutes) release edited from two concerts given by the jazz superstar lineup of Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, and Pat Metheny at the Mellon Jazz Festival held in the Academy of Music in Philadelphia on June 23, 1990. This was part of an outstanding world tour following drummer DeJohnette's Parallel Realities album, though this program and the original album have only two cuts in common, "Indigo Dreamscapes" and "Nine over Reggae." Hancock (piano and keyboards) and Metheny (guitar) were both on Parallel Realities, but here they contribute material from their own back catalog: Hancock a barnstorming 15-minute "Hurricane" and the closing "Cantaloupe Island," Metheny the appropriately nocturnal and reflective "The Bat." Bassist Dave Holland, who was the guest on the tour, wrote the longest cut, "Shadow Dance." Here are four of the world's finest modern jazz artists at the top of their game; virtuoso playing certainly, but also impeccable taste and artistry, seamless interaction, and inspired music-making. When combined with a transparent, gimmick-free visual style, which simply shows the musicians playing (concentrated on whoever is soloing), the result is an uplifting, exhilarating example of how well jazz can be presented on DVD. --Gary S. Unusual for 1990, the concert was shot in 16x9 and is presented anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs, though nothing can disguise the relative softness of live video shot under concert lighting, nor the occasional after-images left by the lighting. But the stereo sound is absolutely first-rate, and that's what really counts. --Gary S. Dalkin, .co.uk See more

lightning is gonna strike twice
What a find. I was at a show by this quartet, one week later, at the Beacon Theater in NY. Me and three dead head buddies decided to see something besides the Grateful Dead for a change. We we're sitting fairly close to the stage in the cavernous hall. The subject of this show would come up periodically. The consensus was that we couldn't fully comprehend the music we heard that night but were fascinated by the musicianship. I actually got to meet Pat Metheny a couple of years later at the Lonestar Café in NY, he and Phoebe Snow were guesting on a Donald Fagen gig. I asked Pat specifically about the Beacon quartet gig from 1990 and how he and Herbie got together for it (what a dumb question). He was very nice but at the time I still assumed this was a one off thing not realizing this was a small tour of sorts. To be fair, the GD was an obsession but it was pleasin'. Fast forward to 2015, when this DVD came to my attention, "oh this was a whole tour". I watched the Cantaloupe Island on a web site about drumming. It all came rushing back. Now I'm waiting for the disc to arrive. I think I may finally be able to process this music, and I cannot wait.

POWERHOUSE PERFORMANCES
A thoroughly entertaining DVD of pure jazz featuring powerhouse performances from the incomparable quartet of Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock (it's such a treat to see these two amazing musicians together) Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland. The sound and vision are immaculate and the camera work shows to the full the incredible musicianship on display. I've always preferred Pat's group endeavours but shows like this have me leaning the other way. Pat looks more relaxed and is clearly enjoying himself here compared with the concentration evident in the We Live Here Live in Japan DVD recently released. Highlight is by far the catchy Hancock classic Canteloupe Island with Pat in unusual territory playing funky lead guitar lines. Herbie goes into overdrive here and stages an explosive piano solo that has the other band members nodding their appreciation. All I can say to any jazz enthusiast is to buy this DVD and be dazzled by the truly stellar performances of these exceptional musicians.

Haven't seen yet but I was there
I don't need to see this to know it's awesome. I've seen Pat Metheny many many times and when I saw the June 24th show for free on Boston's Esplanade, it absolutely blew my mind! All four of these players were at the top of their game. It's a rare pleasure when Pat plays outside of his group because he takes a lot more risks than he allows himself to in the confines of his tightly orchestrated PMG endeavors. The other three are equally amazing, acting like they've been playing together for years. I've had a bootleg of the Boston show since it happenned and it still gets played quite a bit. Out of the hundreds of concerts I've seen, this one easily fits in to my all-time top 10.

Dave Holland needs bass lessons.
The DVD: Great video and sound quality. Technically, probably one of the best DVD - non DTS DVDs that I have. One minor comment is that the bass output seems little weak!............ The performance: Dave Holland's performance is so mundance and his sound setting is so dull! Lots of people seems to be impressed with this guy but I guess they don't know better... (you got to see/hear Stanley Clark, Louis Johnson, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, to name a few, to know what I am talking about) Dave Holland needs bass lessons! I am not to impress with Metheny's sound either, his performance is 4 stars. It has continuous muted/monotonous quality..... BUT Dejohnette and Hancock are just marvelous!

Warning! Region 2 DVD
WARNING- This is a Region 2 DVD, meaning it will not play on most North American spec DVD players. So I cannot review the actual contents. It is in the small print of the listing, but I missed it. Certainly not the seller's fault. So $20 wasted and corporate greed wins again!

This One Is A Masterpiece:
If I never see another Concert in DVD again, I'll be glad that I picked up this one. This is for people who just love strait-ahead Jazz. The minute I sat down and watched it, I called my friend (J.C) and told him, "don't ask any questions, just go on Amazon.Com and pick this one up, you won't regret this one." Jack DeJohnette, Hancock, Metheny and Holland, put together some pieces here that will send you thru the roof. The Audio Sound is Great, despite it not being DTS. None-the-less, this is a must in your collection. It really does not get any better than this. RIGHT ALONGSIDE "CASINO LIGHTS 99"

A must have if you love jazz.
I've seen parts of this 1990 concert on the internet and just had to have a copy. You can't get more top-flight musicians than this quartet. The music just blows one away with its artistry, wonderfully rendered in 5.1 Surround sound. It's fortunate that it was filmed in wide screen and not the 4:3 format common to the era. It's a shame that HD was still in the future but the image is the best it could be.I could not recommend it more highly!

Que du bonheur !!!!
Metheny, Hancock, De Johnette et Holland : un cocktail explosif, soutenu par une bonne prise de son et des choix de morceaux tous plus beaux les un que les autres, le tout à un prix plus qu’attractif.
